Secession talk just getting started (Texas)
Houston Chronicle ^ | June 29, 2009 | PEGGY FIKAC

Still, even his explanations tend to end with a question mark, like this one earlier this year: “I see absolutely no reason for Texas to leave. But if Washington continues to disregard the states and continues to try to force states to change the way that they govern, who knows what may happen?”

There are shortages water being the most significant. But that is a solvable problem.

Some areas have a shortage of water, others have an abundance of water....where I live.

Thanks! I’d also like to check out Ft. Clark and Las Moras springs. Do they let people swim there?

Ft Clark is nice...never stayed there, been through it though... don't know about Las Moras Springs.... If you are really brave Del Rio/Ciudad Acuna is just a hop away...I spent every summer there from 1962 through 1970. Garner State Park is also a stop you may like...but it is in a dry county....the closest 6 pack is in Uvalde....

My favorite convenience store....in Uvalde, Texas.....

Secession is a course of action that is time to seriously consider. Czechoslovakia is a good example of a nation dividing into two to the satisfaction of the people of both states. I do not wish to live in a Socialist country or one were all decisions about damn near everything is made in one city. I’m sure most people on Free Republic are like minded. However, there are many of our fellow citizens that truly want the Nanny state and are quite comfortable with having someone else direct their lives and would not like the rigors and responsibility of free and independent living. Nor or they comfortable living with a Constitutional government that prevents rapid and whimsical changes in government. It is best, therefore to consider dividing this country in two and allowing the people to settle in the one that best suits their disposition.

That is a thoughtful response.

But once the decisions are being made in Austin or Dallas or Houston, Texans may find themselves friendlier to the Nanny state.

That's how things have been in history: colonists throw out the mother country and end up with a government even more powerful than a foreign king could ever be.

The objection deep down may not be to government as such but to not being more fully self-governed.

You see this kind of thing in politics a lot.

The GOP didn't object to deficits and increasing debt when Republicans ran Congress and the White House.

Obama gets away with positions that Democrats would scream about in a Republican -- locking up suspected terrorists, wars overseas, opposition to gay marriage.

And Texans are a lot more opposed to big government when someone else is running it than when it's home grown.

Not so soure about that. Lwyers who have studied the law tell me that the reservation to split is still an open issue and has never been settled.

Walking away from one's share of debts isn't freedom, it's anarchy.

The US debt load and its repayment plus interest is unsustainable... You know it, we all know it.... The banks will move to Texas....and Wall Street will likely reside in Dallas....

Again..this is a dream...sadly a dream that may actually come true....because it will become necessary for survival.

You are absolutely incorrect...we had big issues with Bush one and two....and we made these issues publicly clear from debt to immigration issues....

Okay, I’ll be bold: If you’re a software developer and entrepreneur, where’s a good spot in TX?

But you gave the country "Bush one and two". And Lyndon Johnson, Jim Wright, Lloyd Bentsen, John Connally, Phil Gramm, Tom Delay. That's a lot of big government politicians, and those who weren't, certainly had other problems.

I certainly can't say that that's a worse record than New York or California or Massachusetts or New Jersey or Illinois or Vermont, but Texas can't wash its hands of them because it complained (usually after the rest of the country did).

I know Austin is a good spot for software development - and there's a great company with a development house there that I used to work for - but it's a bit more liberal.

Dallas is a good spot for banking/mainframe type work, which I am heavy with per recent experience. Downside is (no offense) my dad hates the Cowboys :-), and mom and dad would most likely follow wherever we go.

Houston has a special place in my heart because that is where I spent most of my childhood, probably could track down some old childhood friends, and is probably the choice for entrepreneurship but may not be the best choice for high-tech.

Don't know much about the other cities.

Hoping to hear from some Texans on the subject.

My Wife and I have spent several trips out that way. We have friends that own an RV park on the Frio, have spent time in Del Rio/Acuna as well as Amistad and Seminole canyon.

We have actually been looking at property just north of there for hunting but, seems a bit too far to go for that purpose.

We’l be back out that direction real soon.

what Texas can do is beak into seven OTHER States and then demand 14 new Senators be seated. Then the fun starts.

Just playing along for fun. So what makes you think that seven other states out of the make up of Texas today would result in 14 senators dedicated to the conservative cause? Texas has four cities listed in the top 17 population wise in the US. How do you propose to get 14 conservative senators having to deal with that population mix beginning with Houston the fourth largest city in the US and some 4 million in MSA population?

Can’t give you much info on jobs per se. The Dallas area has some nice areas outside of Dallas/Fort Worth proper that conservative and good locations to raise children. But you are correct that the Cowboys would be blasted all over the news, tv/radio/print for you dad to see/hear.

Houston has grown and to me is a very hard area to traverse on a daily basis. So location, both job and home, would be a major item there it seems to me. But there are some nice areas out of Houston proper that are enticing.

Good luck.

I never said that they would be conservative. The only point is that there would be a great reluctance to adding Senators from “Texas 1-7” to the Senate.

Who dominoes after that?
How bout this.
Texas, Oklahoma, Alaska and Vermont. Weird configuration, but a lot of like minded folks. And speaking of dominoes, if you are to be part of this freedom nation, you have to know how to play 42 or moon. Look it up.
