Secession talk just getting started (Texas)
Houston Chronicle ^ | June 29, 2009 | PEGGY FIKAC

Still, even his explanations tend to end with a question mark, like this one earlier this year: “I see absolutely no reason for Texas to leave. But if Washington continues to disregard the states and continues to try to force states to change the way that they govern, who knows what may happen?”

Secession! Oh sure, screw the constitution and walk away.

The screwing is being done by the federal representatives..and may I suggest that you review (read) the Declaration of Independence....

It the people of Texas really, truly want to leave then I'll be the first to wish them well and offer them a sincere goodbye. But don't go shafting the rest of us and expecting us to sit back and take it.

Well...come on down...you don't seem to be the Texian type though.....the pink boots just cause a nod and a grunt.....by us local folk. We know what your tryin ta do....

Texas wouldn't just get to walk away from its share of US obligations.

Hmmm...like the United States?

May I mention.....the old Social Security lock box BS? The borrowing now to be paid by all future generations fiasco?

Walk away...? That's exactly what the Congress has done with a creepy smirk on their faces....they no longer even read the bills they pass and are proud of their insanity....

I have been in Texas exactly twice in my life - once changing planes in Dallas and once changing planes in Houston. I'm happy leaving things at that.

Looks like you've got big feet there, cowboy.

If you ever get a chance, come to San Antonio and visit the Alamo. You will be inspired.

Also..visit Alamo Village in Brackettville, Texas where the original Alamo was filmed...and many videos and other movies. The set is an exact recreation of the Alamo Mission and fortress.... One can walk the premises without interference.

Politicians of all States are equally responsible for the government's current economic fiasco. Which is why any State that wants to leave is going to have to shoulder its share of the burden.

Similarly, any peaceful resolution would involve Texans taking their share of the debt, if they ever wanted to be treated seriously by other countries (or ever again trade with the US).

Who are you, Antonio López de Santa Anna? You sound like Mexico....in 1836.....

The US will need to trade with Texas more than the Texas with the US....

I agree with a previous poster about the snow birds making it more difficult to secede. I don’t live in Texas, but if Texas did secede from the American Empire and become a free republic, I’d move there. There is no hope for the government in Washington to be anything but a socialistic oligarchy. It will only get worse regardless of which party is in power.
Perhaps if Texas is successful in becoming a free republic (no pun intended), other states may follow.

Secession is the wrong approach. That has been asked and answered. Texas (and the other several States cannot secede). The law after the Civil War was strengthened. what Texas can do is beak into seven OTHER States and then demand 14 new Senators be seated. Then the fun starts.

Why do you think Texans should be free to ignore their share of the debt if they decide to secede? That would be like a business partner trying to leave a company without taking his share of the company's liabilities. Anyway, if Santa Anna had been willing to let Texas leave peacefully in exchange for them taking their share of the debt, he would have been in the right.

The US will need to trade with Texas more than the Texas with the US....

Unlikely. The US would still be more than 10 times as big as Texas. The situation would be similar to our trade with Canada, which is much more important to the Canadian economy than to ours.

Texas couldn't do that without Congress' consent, which would be unlikely.

Texas (and the other several States cannot secede).

Mexico thought that was the case too....

People will be free...regardless of the attitude derived of Civil War legislators...

If Texas goes, Oklahoma goes too, I’m sure...
Now, who “dominoes” after that? Don’t know, but there would be a quite a few. Look at all the states with “sovereignty” legislation going through, and those with “nullification” laws going through.

No, Texas wouldn’t be alone. The “Free Republic” would be made up of more than the Lone Star State.

I'll point out that you didn't secede from Mexico. You fought and won a rebellion and achieved your independence that way. You're currently batting .500 in that respect.

Thanks! I’d also like to check out Ft. Clark and Las Moras springs.

Do they let people swim there?

Actually no they can't, not without consent of Congress. And what do you suppose the chances of getting that is?

Does your concept of freedom also include responsibility? Walking away from one's share of debts isn't freedom, it's anarchy.
