HCL Technologies is one of India's most powerful and respected tech firms. The company scored a massive $170M USD outsourcing contract from Microsoft last year. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer lavished them with praise, stating, "That extra mile walk by the team (at HCL) has increased our mutual trust and has taken our relationship to newer heights. "
Now HCL's CEO Vineet Nayar has gone on record with some controversial remarks about the quality of American technology college graduates. Tired of hearing stereotypes about Indian tech grads, Mr. Nayar, speaking before an audience of business partners in New York City, blasted American tech grads as "unemployable".
He elaborated that he views American tech grads as inferior to those from India, China, and Brazil as the Americans only want to "get rich" and dream up "the next big thing". He says students from countries like India, China, and Brazil are more willing to put the effort into "boring" details of tech process and methodology, such as ITIL, Six Sigma, etc.

Yeah. We are all idiots.
Just keep thinking that.
I’ll take American Engineers over Indian group-think script-hacks, every time.
I ain’t no idiot. I’m a proud dumbie!
However ONE thing he said did ring true for me. Today's young kids (and yes, even though I am in my 30s, I can call them “kids”) want to get rich soon.
Even in this recession, we ARE hiring. You would think young kids would develop a work ethic. We are a white collar software company based in Dallas with a Class A office space and the latest in computers and software.
I can hire a 40 year old Software Engineer who may have worked in MFC and does not fully know Dot Net 3.5 but he will work TWENTY times harder than this young punk kid from SMU or UTD who knows Dot Net real well but is an IDIOT and has an attitude and wants 50% raise EVERY quarter!!!!
So my advice to everyone is: Hire an Older American. Someone over the age of 30. Someone who freaking appreciates the job!
Six Sigma? That system is a joke. Don't know what ITIL is.
I have worked with his people. All I can say is, I will take 1 good solid American over 5-10 of his guys.
I agree...I have interviewed a few kids out of college recently for an entry level Engineering position and none were worth hiring. Beyong coming in to the interview with facial peircings and being dressed innapropriately (jeans), they just don’t seem to be ready to do the work. They all seem to have a real sense of unfounded entitlement. It’s bizzare. I even had one guy curse through the whole interview...
At least as far as US grads go it’s probably true. India has a University more demanding than MIT. Think about that.
Well, actually in many ways he is correct but much of that is caused by corporate hiring practices that stress things other than technical ability and work ethic. You must be the right color, sex and have the correct demeanor. Diversity is what it is all about. I would take one C student that worked his/her way through school (not even related to the degree or job) than twelve of the straight A students I’m forced to interview. They know much but understand nothing and have difficulty applying what they do know.
Same here. The build quality of their code is not up to what an American with a CS degree does. Not even close. They’ll get it done by declaring all variable global and such like. Hard to maintain.
NME!
You nailed it.
I was interviewing for a junior Software Engineer position for which we are paying $45K.
I had FRESH out of college kids telling me that they needed $60K “just to survive”. This is in freaking DFW where you can buy a quarter acre 2500 sq. foot BRAND new home for $139K!!
And don’t even get me started on the fact that NONE of these kids bothered to shave or put on a suit. Three showed up in flip flops or sandals.
Am I just a fuddy duddy despite being in my 30s???
I am totally confused about what has happened to this “Obama Generation”
Every generation is cool and hip and when I was in my 20s I thought all 30+ year people were practically one foot in the grave.
However, every interview I went to I dressed in a dark suit and had polished black shoes and was groomed to perfection. This was true even in 1997 when I was interviewing for those wacky Dot Com companies that had office massage hours and such..
But at least the US grad will have completed several semesters of diversity training, Women's studies, and "protesting 101". That vital knowledge should come in handy in the workplace!
Do I really need the "sarcasm" tag?
If you’re talking about Hyderabad, I’ll take MIT every time. I’ve had a half dozen of their grads work for me. Sorry, but keep them away from any architectural decisions. They can implement a spec, but don’t ask them to derive requirements and use cases. Nuh-uh. And it isn’t a language issue. They’ve been spoon fed and can’t handle what falls outside the lines.
Exactly...
