I agree...I have interviewed a few kids out of college recently for an entry level Engineering position and none were worth hiring. Beyong coming in to the interview with facial peircings and being dressed innapropriately (jeans), they just don’t seem to be ready to do the work. They all seem to have a real sense of unfounded entitlement. It’s bizzare. I even had one guy curse through the whole interview...
NME!
You nailed it.
I was interviewing for a junior Software Engineer position for which we are paying $45K.
I had FRESH out of college kids telling me that they needed $60K “just to survive”. This is in freaking DFW where you can buy a quarter acre 2500 sq. foot BRAND new home for $139K!!
And don’t even get me started on the fact that NONE of these kids bothered to shave or put on a suit. Three showed up in flip flops or sandals.
Am I just a fuddy duddy despite being in my 30s???
I am totally confused about what has happened to this “Obama Generation”
Every generation is cool and hip and when I was in my 20s I thought all 30+ year people were practically one foot in the grave.
However, every interview I went to I dressed in a dark suit and had polished black shoes and was groomed to perfection. This was true even in 1997 when I was interviewing for those wacky Dot Com companies that had office massage hours and such..
I wonder if their lack of a work ethic and poor interviewing skills is due in part to no required summer internship. One hand-on engineering school in Maine has a very good power engineering program and the students are required to work 3 months under faculty supervision at a power plant for 2 summers. They learn what is expected of them in the workforce and seem to be ready to go to work after graduation.
Each graduate of this program received 2-3 job offers after graduation this past month.
