*Welcome to the FReeper Canteen* Summertime Memories
Running through a lawn sprinkler getting soaked on a hot summer day
Endless games of hide 'n seek which went on as late as our neighborhood group could get away with and the parents called us home
Campfire Girl summer camp with the bugle wake-up call every morning
Hot dogs from the grill with lots of mustard
Cicadas singing all night long... the next morning their empty shells on the tree
A cold, sweet snow cone..with the inevitable dribbles on the chin
Swimming holes, creeks, and lakes.
Chiggers and fireflies lighting up the night
What are some of your favorite memories of summer?

I only remember going all day long and earning just about 50 cents. You got paid? Not at home we didn't, but some farmers paid us about the same $.50 per day. I remember hauling hay for some farmers or ranchers and we got paid $.10 per bale that was shared between the three of us.
I remember missing th e JR/SR prom one year because we hauled hay. There was a big storm headed our way and one rancher called us to haul his hay for $.25 per bale. We put over 450 bales into his barns that afternoon. We also had some decent spending money.

WELCOME TO

(where our troops, allies and their families can refresh themselves)
Good morning, Everyone.
Good morning to our AWESOME Military, our Allies, and their families.

Thank you, Connie, for preparing the Canteen for today's activities.
Geez, looks like you covered it all in the opening thread. Running through the creeks, Cicadas singing all night long...their empty shells on the tree, hide-n-seek up until called home to go to bed. The only one I see missing is running through water puddles during a summer shower and chasing fireflies and putting them in mason or mayonnaise jars to watch them light up the dark.
Still, it looks like childhood summer memories are pretty much the same.
Next is our local DC Metroland weather report
~ Today....Partly cloudy. Hot. High 91F. Winds light and variable.
~ Tonight..... Partly cloudy with a slight chance of thunderstorms overnight. Low 71F. Winds light and variable. Chance of rain 30%.

Please note that this is like the 4th day without it raining - disregarding the chance of thunderstorms tonight.
I've got to make my rounds quickly as the time is flying and I need to get some work done. But, you stay right where you are. Keep the troops entertained and the Canteen clean.........Cause.......if you don't........I'll tell Ma!

Remember, the Canteen is

So, come on in and sit for a while. There's always plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS
REMEMBER THEM ....

DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM
FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.

I remember all of yours, connie, and the joy of having a screened in porch to sleep on..no A/C in those days..I also remember the treat of homemade ice cream...sitting on the ice cream maker top while someone else cranked..We had a cow and plenty of cream during the years of WW2..but sugar was scarce ..rationed.
My earliest favorite thing I recall was getting old enough to be allowed to go down to a shallow creek and playing at my grandparents farm. I was in heaven.

$20 in my pocket. A backpack. A sleeping bag. A copy of “Steal This Book” by Abby Hoffman. And a thumb.
I went from Ohio to the Pacific and back. I saw this wonderful country. I met people from all walks of life. I stopped where I wanted. Slept under the stars. Got caught in sandstorms and rainstorms. Saw natural wonders. Smelled the air, which is different depending on where you go.
I wish I could do it again.
