Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.
"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''
Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

CORPUS CHRISTI - There is another swine flu death in Nueces County.
Late Thursday afternoon, local health officials confirmed that a 45-year-old woman, who died Saturday, was a victim of swine flu.
The woman has only been identified as a health care worker and had been hospitalized since Thursday. She died Saturday night.
The county has now had two swine flu deaths locally in less than a week and it is the sixth swine flu death in Nueces County this year.
I’m going to have to tell you that I find it very difficult to believe that only 75 children died each year of influenza.
The figure of 30,000 deaths per year has been thrown out there by a CDC spokesperson. Your figure would mean that only about 0.25% of all deaths from seasonal influenza would be made up of one of two groups that are supposed to be the most at risk.
Something doesn’t smell right about your or the CDC’s figures that you are presenting.

New studies show that many people spread swine flu for a week or more after symptoms first appear, and doctors say coughing may be a better sign than fever for telling who is contagious.
Health officials have been telling people to avoid contact with others for a day after their fever goes away. The new research suggests they may need to be careful for longer, especially at home where the risk of spreading the germ is highest.
“This study shows you’re not contagious for a day or two. You’re probably contagious for about a week,” said Dr Gaston De Serres, a scientist at the Institute of Public Health in Quebec, Canada.
He presented one of the studies on Monday at a microbiology conference.
It is unclear whether the new research will prompt the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to rethink its advice. Long breaks from school and work do not seem worth it for a virus that now seems to cause mostly mild illness, said the CDC’s flu chief, Nancy Cox. Swine flu is spreading so widely now that confining the sick does less good, she said.
“We tried to have our guidance balance out all of these factors,” she said. “It’s just virtually impossible not to have virus introduced into settings such as schools and universities.”

Man succumbs to swine flu in Gujarat
Ahmedabad, Oct 1 (PTI) A 48-year-old man today died due to swine flu in the SSG Hospital in Vadodara, taking the toll to 34 in the state, health officials said.
The victim has been identified as Rohit Patel, who tested positive for swine flu virus and was put on ventilator.
His condition turned critical yesterday.
Meanwhile, today six more positive cases of H1N1 virus were reported from the state, taking the number positive cases to 208.

Dong Nai Province on Tuesday recorded the nation’s sixteenth death swine flu death as the epidemic spread to 58 of its 62 provinces and cities.
The Ministry of Health reported Wednesday that the latest victim, a 16-year-old pregnant teenager, was admitted to the general hospital in the southern province on Sunday with symptoms like respiratory problems and fever.
The hospital’s doctors treated her with antiviral drug Tamiflu and sent her to Ho Chi Minh City-based Cho Ray Hospital the following day.
As she had already developed critical pneumonia and respiratory failure, doctors from Cho Ray Hospital performed emergency surgery to take out her 39-week-old baby, who is now in good health, the ministry said.
The mother, whose name has not been released, was given Tamiflu after the surgery, but succumbed on Tuesday night. She is the third pregnant woman to die of swine flu in Vietnam so far.
The HCMC Pasteur Institute later confirmed she had tested positive for influenza A (H1N1) virus, listing her as the third pregnant woman to die after swine flu so far in Vietnam.
At a meeting on Wednesday in Hanoi, the Ministry of Health reported another 205 cases of H1N1 infection nationwide, increasing the country’s tally to 9,058 since the virus was first detected in May.
The ratio of H1N1 deaths now stands at 1.7 for very 1,000 patients who’ve tested positive, compared to the world’s ration of 12 per thousand, the ministry said.
To ease the overload of H1N1 patients at major city hospitals, the ministry will soon issue instructions on home treatment for the patients, Nguyen Huy Nga, head of the ministry’s Preventive Health and Environment Department, said at the meeting.

A Dalton elementary school student has died from illness related to swine flu.
The Dalton Daily Citizen reported Thursday that Candy Chen, 7, died early Wednesday morning.
The girl was in the second grade at City Park Elementary School in the northwest Georgia town.
Believe what you want to. That 36,000 figure is posted on the CDC site. I just posted a link to it.
I looked at the data as you requested. I still say that the CDC has some splaining to do Lucy.
The influenza related deaths are about 36,000 according to two respected studies.
The CDC states that there are two groups that are most at risk for influenza. Traditionally those would be the young and the elderly.
What the CDC and you need to explain, is how one of those two groups only has around 50 deaths each year on average. If we are to take your premise seriously, then the mortality in the less exposed groups would have to be even less. Are you willing to go out on a limb and state we only have about 150 deaths from influenza each year.
That’s what your argument’s end conclusion would have to result in. Do you believe that? Seriously?

Pathologist says W. Pa. woman died of swine flu

PITTSBURGH—A forensic pathologist says an otherwise healthy 45-year-old western Pennsylvania woman has died of the swine flu.
Dr. Cyril Wecht (WEKT) says he was hired by the family of Deborah Spangler to confirm her cause of death. Spangler, of Renfrew, Butler County, died Sept. 10 after seeking treatment for the flu at a hospital.
Wecht and Dr. Bruce Dixon, director of the Allegheny County Health Department, announced the results of the autopsy because they say the woman’s family has been shunned by those who don’t understand the flu.

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Substantial flu illness has hit nearly every state, according to the CDC.
The most recent flu data show the virus continues to impact pregnant women: through the end of August, 100 women had to be hospitalized and 28 died.
In Evansville, one young mother remains in intensive care with the swine flu.
Experts say the first doses of the H1N1 vaccine will be available Tuesday.
The nasal vaccine and will first go to health care workers and children, ages six to 24 months.
The H1N1 shot will be available later next week.
States and cities are developing distribution plans.
Here in the Tri-State, health officials issue a new warning when it comes to the virus.
They say to avoid a pandemic patients, who are high risk with flu like symptoms, should only make trips to the emergency room and health clinics as a last resort.
Emergency rooms and health care clinics are filling up fast with flu sick patients.
Officials are say only go to the ER If you have emergency problems.
A local hospital emergency room and convient cares have seen more patients lately waiting to be treated for flu like symptoms.
Doctors say it may not be the best idea to get treated there.
“Being in public is not a good idea because it exposes other people,” Dr. Timothy Almquist said. “Certainly we do have a chance of a large number of people in the emergency room and clinics and being in those locations and becoming exposed.”
Dr. Almquist says if you display flu signs such as fever, a cough, sore throat or body aches then consult your personal physician first.
“Typically taking fluids, Ibuprofen brands of fever medication are a good idea,” Almquist says.
Dr. Almquist says never hesitate to come to the emergency room if you experience serious warning signs of a flu-like illness.
“If you have difficulty breathing, chest pains, abdominal pains or other issues that you consider to require assistance please make sure you come to the hospital,” Almquist says.
Family practice physician, Dr. Don Brake encourages his patients to call as soon as they start to show signs of the flu or H1N1.
“Calls us or my preference is just have you come in and what we have done for a few patients if they have symptoms, prescribatory symptoms, we will give them a mask,” Brake says.
Dr. Brake says right now he is prescribing Tammiflu for his patients who feel they can’t self medicate.
Patients may have some options if they do not have a personal doctor or medical insurance.
“Echo Clinic and some urgent cares are available,” Brake says.
While some doctors may treat patients for their flu symptoms over the phone, Dr. Brake says you stop in and see your physician so you are diagnosed correctly.
There was 18,903 total influenza / flu deaths from the year 1979- 2001 .
I will, however, stand by my contention that the estimates from the WHO and the CDC do not reflect case-by-case real world testing of everyone who has flu-like symptoms. They are estimates. As such, they take a lot for granted and are grossly misleading, if not rather inaccurate.
Please bear in mind that both the WHO and the CDC do not officially acknowledge any A/H1N1 case unless it has been confirmed by medical testing. Yet, the infection rate estimates for “seasonal flu” are not based upon testing of every single individual who has flu-like symptoms. According to data from the CDC itself, only a few hundred thousand people actually test positive for influenza in the United States each year. Apparently, many millions of Americans with flu-like symptoms are either not tested by their physicians or do not seek medical care at all. Therefore, they can not legitimately be counted as flu cases.
Again, according the the CDCs own reports, “seasonal flu” has been the official cause of death for an average of only 1,263 deaths per year from 1979 though 2006. Considering this very low number, I think it is irresponsible, if not unethical, to imply that influenza is a contributing cause of 36,000 deaths in the United States each year.

Death Rate of Regular Seasonal flu and Swine Flu compared
In 2003 the CDC starting claiming that 36,000 people a year died from regular flu. This number is constantly compared to the current pandemic to persuade people not to “panic” or be concerned. Where did this number come from?
According to twenty years’ worth of “cause of death” reporting data from the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza is the official cause of death for an average of 1,263 people in the United States each year. Indeed, the CDC’s most recent official tally of death by influenza indicates that only 849 people died of influenza in 2006. These very low numbers would seem to contradict the often cited figure of “36,000 flu-related deaths per year” in the United States, which appears on the CDC’s own web site.”
The 36,000 number comes from statistical modeling; comparing pneumonia or other similar deaths in the winter and summer. It is not derived from numbers of people known to have died from flu, or people tested for flu, or even generalized lists of people dying from flu. Additionally, 95% of flu deaths are of people above the age of 65, and
most are even older. They are people who are already near death from others causes, seem to get sick with “something” and die.
On the other hand, the people really dying from swine flu are mostly younger people, many of who are perfectly healthy. It is true that swine flu is easier to catch as no one has ever had it before and therefore has no immunity to it.

If you’d like to be informed about what’s going on with this flu pandemic, and what are the likely or possible scenarios, there are places to learn. I got interested in the topic here on FR around 2005 and have spend literally hundreds of hours reading and studying, especially on the PFI forum (Pandemic Flu Information) - the best flu forum IMO.
