Tom Daschle, the man originally tapped to lead President Obama's health care push, is now urging him to drop the idea of offering a government-run plan.
According to ABC, the former Democratic Senate Majority leader had this to say:
"While I feel very strongly that consumers should have the choice of a national, Medicare-like plan, my colleagues do not. . . But we were concerned that the ongoing health reform debate is beginning to show signs of fracture on the public plan issue, so in order to advance the process of developing bipartisan legislation and to move it forward, it's time to find consensus here," Daschle said.
"We've come too far and gained too much momentum for our efforts to fail over disagreements on one single issue," he said.
This is significant news not merely as a result of his relationship to Obama, but because Daschle is somebody who is recognized for his network on Capitol Hill, his ability to shepard legislation through Congress and strike compromises. If he is coming out and saying this publicly, it's a pretty good indication that Democrats simply do not have the votes to pass legislation that would include a government plan.

But Nancy says that the public option WILL be there - they’ll change the name of it, but “it will be there”.
Widdle Tommy is no longer on the gravy train hisself, that’s why!
The foundation is cracking and the building is starting to disintegrate.
Just like what happened to Hillarycare!
Remember the bus tour? Ha-ha!!
In other words, while Little Tommy Daschle fears the full-blown 100% national health care plan for socialized medicine is dead, he believes there is still a chance to salvage 50% of the above by gulling some weak-kneed RINOs.
Nonetheless, we would still be on the road to socialized medicine...it just might take a little longer.

That would be great news...we had a nice counter protest in Seattle against Obamacare recently...the libs were SHOCKED!

Actually the ‘public plan’ is polling well (76%) whats not polling so well is how to *pay* for the public plan!....
Exactly! I picked up on that immediately, too.
But wait!!!! Obama is coming to you via ABC to explain to you what he’ll be shoving down your throat.....just like everything else he’s done.
When will the libs get the message that we do not want a government run health care plan? The House of Commons guy, I think his name is Hannan, made the case quite clearly. In England, they have had their system in place for many generations, so they know no other way of life. Americans, on the other hand, know what good health care is, and don’t want to have it taken away.
Of course, they’ll keep chipping away at it until one day they have the whole kit and caboodle, but hopefully, that won’t happen for many generations to come, if at all.
Exactly! I had feared with the numbers being the way they were the GOP could do nothing to stop this government run scam but it seems the longer people talk about it the more they come around.
Its typical of Obama ideas, he has to rush them in because if people took the time to know the details there is no way they will go along with him... you can pay for health care with hope..
VERY poorly. Older Americans on Medicare SHOULD be afraid, Socialized Medicine will lead to cheep suicide drugs, but no further treatment.
The whole thing SUCKS.
Guess their poll numbers are reflecting that America DOES NOT WANT SOCIALISM. We have the best healthcare system in the world. Lets NOT break it! Okay? That works for me.
Whoa...payback time for being thrown under the Obama bus. Throwing a little sand in the gears I see.
Are you telling me I have to agree with TOM DASCHLE on something?
What colleagues are those Tom, fellow lobbyists who don't admit to lobbying yet bring in $5,000,000. for non-lobbying
Don’t believe a word.
Somehow the liar will move ahead with single payer plans and the congress will vote it in despite any opposition.
