The feud between late-night talk show host David Letterman and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is no laughing matter. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telelphone survey finds that nearly two-thirds of American adults (64%) say its inappropriate for comedians like Letterman to joke about the children of public figures.

I would be interested in seeing Palin's numbers now. Last time Rasmussen polled her she was at 52% favorable.
I can’t believe it’s only 64%! What is wrong with the other 36%??
Does that include Chelsea?
Yikes!
Well, they are Democrats. Look at the breakdown posted in the first post. His numbers have INCREASED among Democrats.
Which shows you just how low Democrats are.
She should have been completely off-limits until she became a political figure. Now, you can go after her.
But to go after a child, whose only crime is to be the offspring of Bill and Hillary? She deserved our sympathies.
Well, Conan is an abject failure. Letterman is picking up the overflow.
Otherwise, his ratings are not increasing.
Just wondering, but are you willing to say it is wrong when it is a conservative attacking a liberal's child?
For the record, I am.
In general they should not. If the child is actually campaigning (making political statements) then it’s OK.
The other 36% see the world through their political filter or live in that world of filth where the Letterman jokes came from.
They shouldn’t make their dirty jokes and nasty comments about ANY children. Famous or non. Who the hell do they think they are anyway? They are over the line comments and he said them and he meant them. He made a terrible joke about a young 14 year old girl. That’s unacceptable and he should go. He’s not funny anyway.
Similar, but not Chelsea. : )
Of course I would.
If the jokes were about Obama’s kids, this poll would be 100% opposed...
I think the question is overly broad. Jokes about children of public figures is fine with me if its about something cute or silly or innocent that they’ve done.
It’s *sexual* jokes about children or mean-spirited jokes about children that should be off-limits, which really shouldn’t be that difficult for most adults with common sense to avoid.
How can what Letterman said be considered a joke, it was a calculated cruel statement and there wasn’t anything funny about it.
Absolutely!
There is too much personality in politics these days. OK it matters, but policies and beliefs are far more important.
Politicians are in the public eye. They court publicity. Their children, relatives and dependents do not. They should be off-limits to politically motivated “jokes”. Attacking politicians through their children is a bit like fighting wars by carpet-bombing civilians.

Rush Limbaugh ONE time, and only one time, made a comment that inferred Chelsea was not good looking, in an “off the cuff” statement. He apologized unconditionally, and never did that again. I can’t remember ANY other times he’s specifically attacked a political figure’s children since then.
All entertainers and political figures should be so honorable.
Rush should NOT have made that remark about Chelsea being “the White House Dog”. It was callous, cruel and way out of bounds.
But at least Rush didn’t call Chelsea “a slut” which was what Letterman was basically saying about all the Palin women including the 14 yr old.
There is a difference between commenting on a passive state (homely) and accusing someone of active behavior like being promiscuous, without an ounce of proof except “guilt by association”. That was crap even for Letterman and his standards were never very high.
