Former congressman to run for Ohio governor Posted: 06:11 PM ET

From CNN's Mark Preston and John King

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Rep. John Kasich plans to announce next month that he will run for governor of Ohio, two Republican sources tell CNN.

Kasich has already filed paperwork with the state that allows him to raise money, established a Web site and posted a YouTube video encouraging supporters to join him at a June 1 event in his hometown for a "very special announcement." Kasich has not yet officially announced his plans to challenge Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland in 2010.

"Tell it to the Warsaw Jews."

Oh wait, they did have guns, and yet they're dead too...

Well... Not really. The Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising had very few functioning firearms. Most were unarmed. Those who were armed were mostly armed with handguns. Jewish forces had a few rifles, but not enough to matter; which makes your next statement immaterial:

...and the gap between the firepower a private citizen can muster and the firepower a military can muster is even bigger today than it was then.

The gun-owning Jews of Warsaw can hardly be compared to gun-owning Americans of today. They didn't have "black guns", they didn't have scoped deer rifles, they didn't have mountains of ammo. They certainly couldn't head on down to Walmart to stock up. Above all, there weren't 80-100 million of them! The "gap" as you call it is nonexistent.

I will not compromise that principle. If the candidate were 90% on everything else but pro-abortion, it would be difficult for me to support them. I don't really care what label you want to use on me, that's of little importance.

Aside from that, if you can get a candidate who is 90% ideologically "pure" then I think it is a losing strategy to throw them under the bus and brand them a RINO because they may not line up on the other 10%. John Kasich is pro-life (last I heard) and has a solid enough conservative rating that he makes a better choice than any 'Rat. My goal is to get Ted Strickland and Barack Obama out of office, who have been disasterous for the state and the country. That means supporting the most conservative viable candidate, the one who lines up best on the issues and has the best chance of winning. I see no value in terms of advancing a conservative agenda if we cut our own throats every election and hand power to the 'Rats, who have no inclination at all to entertain opposing opinions.

"you're the one claiming to be fed up with all of us here pardner."

No, just a vocal, deluded minority.

Still waiting for some specific examples from my posting history of my supposed liberalism. This is the third time I've asked, I think I'm being more than fair.

"good luck with all that"

Good luck with your attempts to create personal psychological profiles on everybody who disagrees with you on the internet.

"and your notion too that only Ohio posters post on Ohio politics."

Actually, my notion was that posting in a thread on Ohio politics and, you know, self-identifying as being from Ohio might give people a reasonable idea where I hail from and save them the trouble of speculating.

"if you are soft on what the second amendment is intended for then you have a real problem"

I am crystal clear on what the 2nd Amendment was intended for. I also have crystal clarity on exactly what the chances of it working as intended 200+ years later are.

"Do you really think the Left wants our guns so there will be less street crime in their naive reasoning or do you think they want us neutered on politics by other means

In the case of the majority of leftists, the former. In some cases, to be sure, the latter. The reality is that if that minority gains power, and they have the guys with the BIG guns on their side, our guns won't matter.

"btw, I didn't insult you...if you think I did you must be mighty sensitive"

Last I checked, liberal was an insult around here. If you meant something more than to just insult me with your "most culturally liberal" remark, you can try to prove it by making the case from my posting history. I won't be holding my breath.

"Well... Not really. The Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising had very few functioning firearms. Most were unarmed. Those who were armed were mostly armed with handguns. Jewish forces had a few rifles, but not enough to matter;"

I wasn't the one who brought the Warsaw Jews up. It's not my fault if he uses poor examples to support his point. I used the most charitable interpretation of what he might mean by citing the Warsaw uprising: assuming it was supposed to be a contrast and not merely a redundant repetition.

"The gun-owning Jews of Warsaw can hardly be compared to gun-owning Americans of today. They didn't have 'black guns', they didn't have scoped deer rifles, they didn't have mountains of ammo."

They didn't have tanks, and planes, and artillery, etc, etc, etc. And neither will we.

"Above all, there weren't 80-100 million of them!"

Which is itself immaterial, because there will never be 80-100 million Americans in arms against their government. It's a matter of will to fight, not access to firearms.

Note that in this Warsaw example, we've once again switched from a domestic tyranny scenario to a foreign invasion scenario. If a totalitarian government ever comes to power in the United States, it will be by imposition from a foreign power...or with the support of the majority of Americans, just like it did in Hitler's Germany. Which is why some of us recognize the real solution is proactive and preventative: winning the cultural and political battles.

Boy you're really not tracking well here. I didn't put any label on you at all. I just showed how by your own words, how you fit the label that _you_ gave to anyone who was a 90% voter - ie. a "fool". YOUR word, not mine.

“Allow me to reiterate: I SUPPORT THE 2ND AMENDMENT...because citizens should be able to own guns for personal protection against criminals. NOT because re-enacting Lexington and Concord is a viable plan for stopping the rise of a totalitarian regime in the United States.

Then you don’t understand the purpose of the 2nd nor have any faith in your fellow American.

I refuse to allow the 2nd to be defined as for duck hunting of for personal defense. It is for the use in throwing off the chains of a tyrannical government.

At the very beginning I stated the one issue I cannot compromise on. If you are unwilling to allow me that then I guess we can call it quits and you can go somewhere and pat yourself on the back, I don't care. If you want to continue the discussion with that one principle in mind, fine. I see no sense beating it to death. The abortion issue has moral dimensions for me that go beyond the other issues, that's all.

In the context of the thread and the present discussion, IMO John Kasich is a better choice for OH governor that Ted Strickland. Kasich may not be 100% ideologically pure for some, but from my viewpoint he is an acceptable choice, being pro-life and having reasonably solid conservative credentials. He has name recognition and can probably generate support within the statewide party structure, and that will help him with fundraising. That improves his viability as a candidate. I know him personally from having worked on his first campaign for state Senate, and I know he is a smart man. I have reasonable confidence that he will listen to reason and be open to persuasion on areas where he may disagree on specific issues, but not compromise on larger principles. I have no confidence that Ted Strickland, or any other 'Rat, will do likewise. They are in Obombah's pocket. Kasich isn't.

The rest of us don’t have such a crystal ball nor do we have such a lack of a backbone. Your attitude is one of resignation. Thank God our founding fathers didn’t say the same thing of that mighty army and navy the King of England had at his disposal and decided instead to kick his ass. We won, the rest is history.

I certainly will support John Kasich in his bid to be the next Governor of this great(I still think it is)state.

I know this for sure. He will take the steps necessary to end the free ride 36% of Cuyahoga County residents receive thanks to all the idiots that run this part of the state.

Want to keep more of your paychecks? Make sure farmboy Ted is a 1 term Governor. Simple as that!!!

It’s okay. We’re accustomed to cowards projecting their weakness on others. It’s nothing new. You’re in a long line.

"Then you don’t understand the purpose of the 2nd"

I understand the purpose. I also understand that it has little chance of working in practice anymore. Honestly, this is at least the third or fourth time I've said this, does everybody have the same reading difficulties as Travis?

"nor have any faith in your fellow American."

Less all the time, actually.

"It is for the use in throwing off the chains of a tyrannical government."

And the horse-drawn buggy was for use in personal transportation.

“Who else do you have in mind to win during this very important time period?”

Well, At this point I’m not sure the all the players have taken the field. But I sure hope we can get John McCain again for 2012 on the top of the ticket. That would be GREAT! Right?
Maybe Colin Powell for VP.

Give me a Break!

"The rest of us don’t have such a crystal ball nor do we have such a lack of a backbone. Your attitude is one of resignation."

My attitude is one of clear-headed realism.

The 2nd Amendment vision of an armed uprising was always a last resort, and I recognize that time has made such an "appeal to heaven" a chancy thing to fall back on at best. I am not confident of its success, and I have no desire to see such a tragedy take place in my country even if I were.

I also recognize that in such a scenario, the tyrannical government we would be facing would most likely have come to power with the support of the majority of my fellow citizens, meaning the political and cultural battles would have already been lost. Therefore, I plan to pre-empt such a nightmare for my country by doing my best to win those battles.

The only thing I am resigning myself to is that some of those who call themselves conservatives will refuse to fight faithfully with me because they live in a world of ideology where they bear no responsibility for the consequences of their actions or inaction.

"Hey Dan don’t take this personal but based on your posting here .....your an idiot"

Weak, man, weak. At least Travis tried to actually insult my character. A child learns "You're stupid!" as a reflex by age five.

"It’s okay. We’re accustomed to cowards projecting their weakness on others. It’s nothing new. You’re in a long line."

You realize you said that already, right? I ask because I thought maybe you had a little mental fuzzout where you forgot just like you forgot the part of my post which answered the question you asked me in your response to that same post.

And see, in your case, repeating yourself isn't even funny, because I read and responded to your insult the first time. Now, if after the first time you said the coward thing, I had asked you "Hey Travis, do you think I'm a coward who projects his weakness on to others?", THEN repeating it could have really been a hoot. But this way you look doubly bad because not only was a personal attack the only thing you could muster in response to me, BUT FURTHERMORE, it was a personal attack you had already used, almost word for word.

” I also understand that it has little chance of working in practice anymore.”

The same could be said of 1775. England was the most power nation on Earth. We were just a few ragtag colonists with muskets. We won.

The alternative, which is your viewpoint, is to say we should fight a political battle but be prepared to find our actions are limited only to that, and should that fail, we are simply doomed.

Sorry, but that doesn’t sit well with the rest of us.
