Our prayers are with his family.

Back then, pro players held real jobs during the off-season. Baltimore was famous for setting up Colt players in good jobs that they could go to after the season was over. When I went to Lambeau Field for a Packers game, one of the people I tailgated with was a neighbor of Ray Nitzchke's back in the 1960's...said he was a regular normal neighborhood guy, cutting the yard, going to his job in the mornings and coming back in the evenings, maybe played all-time quarterback when the neighborhood kids played pickup football.

Most pro players live in gated communities now, and only make public appearances to "give back to the community", ie, get a tax writeoff. Then again, most of us fans are now psycho-obsessed with our teams and players, and flood sports radio shows and the internet 24/7.

Sad, I didn’t even know he was sick. Jack Kemp was the first presidential candidate I ever voted for...in the 1988 primaries, the first time I was old enough to vote. RIP, Jack.

RIP Sen Kemp. I got to meet him in the early 80’s at a company party in western NY when he was still a senator fro NY. Really nice guy.

My understanding is that Reagan did serious consider Kemp, who was then 45, but his advisers told him he needed GHWB to keep the party united, for GA Jimmy Carter seemed like an overwhelming threat in the summer of 1980.

He was my quarterback and my representative.

One year, Kemp and three other quarterbacks (including Tom Flores) were injured and the Bills relied on Ed Rutkowski, a receiver to be the disaster QB.
When he got into the house , he made Rutkowski his chief of staff. This led to Rutkowski serving two terms as Erie County (Buffalo area) County Executive.

Crap. He was my guy.

Conservative, but always thinking out of the box. Conservative but willing to try new things. Wouldn't violate his fundamental principles, but was not an ideologue. Actually thought about things rather than just parroting something that somebody else wrote for him.

A good, good, friend to minorities but would not pander to them. Believed in giving every person the same opportunity to pull themselves up.

Was a fierce opponent to his opposites, but did not have an ounce of meanness in him. Believed that IDEAS were conservatives greatest weapons and dogma was our opponents biggest weakness.

School vouchers, inner city enterprise zones, increased opportunity.

America would be a much better place if it had listened to him.

I thought he would have done better as the nominee too although I liked both him and Dole.
