CDC: 'Fully expect we will see deaths'

- A U.S. health official said at least five people are hospitalized with swine flu in the United States and deaths are likely. "I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection," as swine flu cases are investigated, said Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control.
He said he did not know about a newspaper report of two deaths in two southern California hospitals in which the victims seemed to be suffering from swine flu symptoms. "I would say I'm very concerned," Besser said.
"We are dealing with a new strain of influenza, we're dealing with a strain of influenza that appears to be moving through our community." Based on the latest lab analysis, Besser said new flu infections are still occurring.
He noted, however, that ordinary human flu accounts for about 36,000 deaths every year in the U.S.
He said hospitalizations nationwide include three in California and two in Texas. Besser said the country has 64 confirmed cases in five states, with 45 in New York, one in Ohio, two in Kansas, six in Texas and 10 in California. At least four other cases have been reported by states.

I’ve taken Tamiflu twice and it helped a lot.
I have asthma and I have a daughter with severe asthma and a daughter with epilepsy and a heart arrhythmia. We are all high risk for flu complications and take the flu shot regularly.
The 2 times I took Tamiflu was once when I forgot to get the flu shot, and got the flu. My husband had it first and was very sick for days, and then I got it. I was only mildly sick.
The 2nd time I took it was when our flu shots didn’t work. My daughter had it first, and then I got it. Once again, I was only mildly sick and my daughter was very sick.
I tend to agree with you, SE Mom. When you figure that the common strains of flu kill 36k a year in the US, I think those in power are jumping the gun to create a crisis that they won’t have to “waste”...

To tell you the honest truth I’m wondering if the flu my family just fought off 2 weeks ago could have been this same thing. It’s not like we all went to the doctor - only my 12 year old who was taking longer to recover and had swelling in her throat (strep test negative). Everyone in my family is fine now, PRAISE GOD. I didn’t get the “flu”, but instead I got a VERY NASTY bronchial infection about 5 days after they all got sick, I was but on heavy duty antibiotics and such and just have some leftover ‘irritation’ that may stay for a bit although the infection is cleared. [Now, whatever it was that my kids and husband came down with our cat (who we didn’t know had leukemia) also caught an upper respiratory infection and got sick the SAME DAY as the rest of my family, and we unfortunately had to put him to sleep. Cats with leukemia are at risk for catching all sorts of stuff that normally wouldn’t hurt a healthy cat — it’s just one of those things that makes you stop and wonder for a moment - especially in light of all this news...]
It really doesn’t matter if our family had this or not — it’s just that so many people get the flu and DON’T go to the doctor and just recover that the spread of this could’ve been going for a WHILE now with no-one really noticing. NOW that they’ve identified this as a new virus, I’d bet they are looking back over medical records and deaths and such over the last few months to see if it’s way more widespread than what we think at the moment (or that they are telling us right now).

I don’t have a problem with the information and comments, but I’m not totally convinced yet. We will find out in time, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see these ideas pan out.
