CDC: 'Fully expect we will see deaths'
Apr 28 02:29 PM US/Eastern By MIKE STOBBE ATLANTA (AP)
- A U.S. health official said at least five people are hospitalized with swine flu in the United States and deaths are likely. "I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection," as swine flu cases are investigated, said Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control.
He said he did not know about a newspaper report of two deaths in two southern California hospitals in which the victims seemed to be suffering from swine flu symptoms. "I would say I'm very concerned," Besser said.
"We are dealing with a new strain of influenza, we're dealing with a strain of influenza that appears to be moving through our community." Based on the latest lab analysis, Besser said new flu infections are still occurring.
He noted, however, that ordinary human flu accounts for about 36,000 deaths every year in the U.S.
He said hospitalizations nationwide include three in California and two in Texas. Besser said the country has 64 confirmed cases in five states, with 45 in New York, one in Ohio, two in Kansas, six in Texas and 10 in California. At least four other cases have been reported by states.

Are you kidding me? They LIVE in Mexico.
Killed one person, IIRC, and harmed many, many more.
I wouldn’t take Tamiflu or any other drug unless I had to. And we are in the pharmacy business.
“Any sign yet that this flu bug is any deadlier than other flu strains? I hear a lot of fear mongering, but have not heard much in the way of real stats. Maybe one of you have.”
(1) Five confirmed hospitalizations in the US out of 68 total cases. That’s way out of the norm for the flu. If those numbers hold, there are going to be a lot of really sick people; (2) Day by day exponential increase in number of reported cases (number 2 doesn’t mean deadly—it just means it spreads easily).
Enough to keep me and my family home for a few days. We will know how this is going to play out by next week.
of course well will see death. but i don´t get whats so special about this flu. as said before the “regular” flu kills thounsands of people every year and their is no media hype. no need to panik this is not Captain Trips knocking on our doors.
extra toilet paper and paper towels.

“According to a Biotech Research Dr we know, the current flu shot does offer some protection from severity of this flu.
This is someone who is currently researching in the field..so we were encouraged by that news.”
Source? This would explain the apparently lower death rate in the US vs Mexico.
That's where it originated so let's give them ‘credit’ for something! Now, close the damn borders!
Yeah...that was startling to me too.
lmao...hilarious!
“Fox News reports that the Los Angeles Coroner believes he has two swine flu deaths today.”
I think that overstates what Fox said. The LACC is investigating two deaths for the possibility of a swine flu connection. Let’s not make this worse than it already is.
Actually if I were an upper level CVS / Walgreens exec I'd consider putting an option out for armed guards for all of the pharmacies.
If this gets as bad as the hype suggests, pharmacies will be facing armed mobs looking for tamiflu.
“Well, with 68 confirmed, and 4 probable deaths”
I have not seen the 4 probable deaths number. Where did you get that?
Alcohol....the drinkin kind.
Auto accidents: approx 40,000.
Lots die every year from flu.
We will have to wait and see how much the taxpayer have to cough up b4 it’s over.
