For the first time in years, more Americans than not say the country is headed in the right direction, a sign that Barack Obama has used the first 100 days of his presidency to lift the public's mood and inspire hopes for a brighter future.
Intensely worried about their personal finances and medical expenses, Americans nonetheless appear realistic about the time Obama might need to turn things around, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll. It shows most Americans consider their new president to be a strong, ethical and empathetic leader who is working to change Washington.
Nobody knows how long the honeymoon will last, but Obama has clearly transformed the yes-we-can spirit of his candidacy into a tool of governance. His ability to inspire confidence Obama's second book is titled "The Audacity of Hope" has thus far buffered the president against the harsh political realities of two wars, a global economic meltdown and countless domestic challenges.
"He presents a very positive outlook," said Cheryl Wetherington, 35, an independent voter who runs a chocolate shop in Gardner, Kan. "He's very well-spoken and very vocal about what direction should be taken."
Other AP-GfK findings could signal trouble for Obama:
_While there is evidence that people feel more optimistic about the economy, 65 percent said it's difficult for them and their families to get ahead. More than one-third know of a family member who recently lost a job.
_More than 90 percent of Americans consider the economy an important issue, the highest ever in AP polling.
_Nearly 80 percent believe that the rising federal debt will hurt future generations, and Obama is getting mixed reviews at best for his handling of the issue.

Exactly.
And it used to be the opposite with Bush.
Repondents would say their personal life was okay, but they were concerned about the unknown neighbor (the sad sack story they watched on network TV). And vote “wrong direction.”
Now they are having difficult times, but because the media builds up this turd, they say “right direction.”
This is, plain and simple, the effects of propaganda.
When they ask the first question. Are you currently unemployed...........they hang up or simply disqualify the answers.
Those are the only figures that matter. Rasmussen via Rush yesterday.
LLS
polling the newsroom again, just like the clinton years...red
more continous lies from the media.....America is in risk of being subverted...
Dems 46%
Repubs 28%
A whopping 18% difference in oversampling.
And even at that bogus number the internals are bad for zero.
Clueless nitwit...
I never thought I'd agree with that, but you're right.
Holy crap...frankly, I didn’t believe you so I followed the links to see exactly what you posted. Not only that, but it is 1,000 adults. Not registered voters, not likely voters, just “adults”. This poll is pure crap.
Even worse... AP did their math wrong too.
It is only 27% Repubs. 9 Stong Repub + 9 Moderate Repub + 9 Lean Repub = 27, not 28.
Incredible.
I absolutely love the smell of desperation as the Antiquated Press pumps the sunshine.
Abortion, gays, ILLEGAL immigrants, 401k's "stolen"....
The klintoons were/are just bunco artists. The HNIC is subversive.
By the way, anyone heard from Slick lately?
To keep him under wraps he must be soakin up the sun, snortin his head off and gettin lewinski’d full time.
Just where in the hell was this poll taken, the ACORN office on the south side of Chicago!? There are lies, damn lies, and this.
“Cheryl Wetherington, 35, an independent voter who runs a chocolate shop in Gardner, Kan. “
Hey Cheryl, how’s business? Obama running a lot of folks into your chocolate shop to spend their disposable income?
Normally, I wouldn't have given this article more than 30 seconds of my time, but the audacity of the spin was so breathtaking, I had to keep reading out of sheer fascination.
It's not til almost the end of this lengthy article that "reporters" Ron Fournier and Trevor Thompson disclose that Of those who say the country is on the right track in the AP-GfK poll, 73 percent are Democrats, 17 percent are independents and 10 percent are Republicans. WTF?
Had Fournier and Thompson not had their heads so far up Obama's rear, they might have noted that the figure means that a whopping 90% of Republicans and 83% of independents think the country is on the wrong track and more than a quarter of Obama's own party agrees! At this early stage of the game, losing the confidence of more than a quarter of the people most inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt is a big deal.
And that's if we overlook the laughable breakdown of the sampling. The internals of this poll are startling for their imbalance. The poll had twice as many declared Democrats as Republicans, and a ridiculous 44% of those polled claimed to be independents or have no party affiliation.
He had a 90% favorable rating after 9-11 and, for various reasons, it dropped to less than 30% by the time he left office. If Obama doesn’t manage to turn this economy around (and he won’t), the middle of the road Americans that just wanted to throw Bush out will do the same to Obama. They’re not all long haired, homosexual, pot smoking, hippes with a hardon for Barack Obama though that surely describes many of them.
Liars. These are the offspring of Goebbels in our midst. I want to see every AP propagandist rounded up and shipped one-way to North Korea. Scum like this should not be allowed to live in America. They’re all seditionists. Engaging in seditionist conduct under freedom of press is not permitted.
