Ron Howard, director of Angels & Demons, the movie version of Dan Browns book by that name, attacked Catholic League president Bill Donohue yesterday on the Huffington Post.
Referring to a booklet on the movie that Donohue authored, Angels & Demons: More Demonic than Angelic, (click here) Howard wrote: Mr. Donohues booklet accuses us of lying when our movie trailer says the Catholic Church ordered a brutal massacre to silence the Illuminati centuries ago. It would be a lie if we had ever suggested our movie is anything other than a work of fiction . Howard also said that most in the hierarchy of the Church will enjoy his film; he denies being anti-Catholic.
Donohue responded today:
Dan Brown says in his book that the Illuminati are factual and that they were hunted ruthlessly by the Catholic Church. In the films trailer, Tom Hanks, who plays the protagonist Robert Langdon, says The Catholic Church ordered a brutal massacre to silence them forever. Howard concurs: The Illuminati were formed in the 1600s. They were artists and scientists like Galileo and Bernini, whose progressive ideas threatened the Vatican.
All of this is a lie. The Illuminati were founded in 1776 and were dissolved in 1787. It is obvious that Galileo and Bernini could not possibly have been members: Galileo died in 1647 and Bernini passed away in 1680. More important, the Catholic Church never hunted, much less killed, a single member of the Illuminati. But this hasnt stopped Brown from asserting that It is a historical fact that the Illuminati vowed vengeance against the Vatican in the 1600s. (My emphasis.)
Howard must be delusional if he thinks Vatican officials are going to like his propagandathey denied him the right to film on their grounds. Moreover, we know from a Canadian priest who hung out with Howards crew last summer in Rome (dressed in civilian clothes) just how much they hate Catholicism. Its time to stop the lies and come clean.

Ron Howard lost his hair due to AIDS.
Its not a lie...its just “fiction”
Opie sure had us fooled......
Sometimes “facts” are just so inconvenient huh?
Ron’s just mad at God for stealing his hair.
The film of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ was truly terrible.

Opie and Hanks don’t hate Catholicism, they hate Christianity. Catholics got the hit in Angels & Demons & Davinci Code. Free Masons, Mormons, and the Founding Fathers will get it in his upcoming book. Hanks and Opie are on record bashing Mormons, Catholics and Evangelicals in CA for their homo-marriage opposition.
I mean, how DARE they oppose abortion-on-demand?
They must be destroyed at any cost, and Opie (a modern-day Leni Riefenstahl) makes propaganda movies to advance the cause.
It’s too bad that Opie turned out to be an idiot.
I thought Tom Hanks did a horrible job in that movie and didn’t fit the part. This one will be worse IMHO.
The Church is made up of men. Some men are bad, some are good... but all are men.
Jesus Christ is and was our savior. The church is there only to help us find our way to the Lord. Anything else it does; Politically, economically, sexually, criminally or whatever that takes us away from it's job of helping us find Christ is a distraction.
I'm a fallen Catholic stumbling around and praying that the Lord is truly merciful. After going to mass I've just found it all to .... much. The hand holding, the shaking hands, the singing of all the responses and on and on and on... I seemed to remember a simpler service with the father, two altar boys and less theatrics/ or whatever they're doing now.
I almost wish for the Latin Mass and then the Gospel and homily to be in English. I'm just getting to be an old fart I guess.
I cannot believe the author coming out saying it was true when you can debunk it with a little thing called ‘search’ — read the book as a work of fiction not expecting the author to declare it was factual. I don’t think the book would be a movie I would want to see.
Tom Hanks was horrible in the DaVinci Code, a movie that I thought was poorly done. I cannot even fathom how they are going to treat this new book. Predict it will flop and not get good reviews.
Exactly, azcap. Count me among the former fans of Ron Howard and Tom Hanks. They absolutely disgust me now with their uber-liberal, anti-Christian agenda... Of all the great movies they could make, why make crap like this?
Now you know what hollywood can do to you.
Opie.. idiot. I guess you could call him an Opie-ot for the masses.
