Gov. Brian Schweitzer has signed into law a bill that aims to exempt Montana-made guns from federal regulation, adding firepower to a battery of legislative efforts to assert states’ rights across the nation.
“It’s a gun bill, but it’s another way of demonstrating the sovereignty of the state of Montana,” Democrat Schweitzer said.

Despite a full-court press by the media to ignore and/or ridicule the issue, there is both a huge effort by the current government to expand their powers far beyond what they already were, and a lot of citizens who do not care for it at all.
That said, I am pessimistic about the eventual outcome.

The Liberal Messiah already caved regarding California's act of State Nullification towards the Controlled Substances Act and Gonzales v. Raich. It will be hard for Him to do otherwise towards Montana's State Nullification in this case.
Many times, the Dems in Montana are a lot better than most of the Republicans we have in the Northeast.
IIRC, they are going to manufacture and sell only 20 of these particular Fed exempt guns, and part of the deal is that they don't leave the state of MT.

I haven’t heard anything on a sovereignty bill for Florida. Even if, by some strange quirk the legislature passed it, what are the chances Charlie Crist would actually sign it? I did a quick search of the official site and didn’t find it, but I’ll spend a little more time on it. I was curious about it myself...

People also go crazy about “automatic” rifles or fully automatic.
Anyone in the military or a gun owner knows that a semi-auto rifle in capable hands beats “spray and pray” automatic. At full auto you burn through ammo rapidly. In addition, the barrel can heat up and the gun becomes almost useless.

i thought the commerce clause was for trade between states... if you aren’t selling it why is that subject to federal laws...

Somebody said something like "In a society that imprisons honest men, the only place for an honest man is in prison." I thought it was Voltaire, but I can't find a cite.
There was a case years ago in which a Fed ruling was that even if a crop like corn were grown in a state, and it was intended to be sold and consumed in the state, that it could still be transported across state lines, therefore the crop was covered by the commerce clause. I have no doubt with these present courts that some Fed judge will come up with the same reasoning about a gun made in the State of Montana.
A previous poster mentioned the Supreme Court case “Wickard v. Filburn” under FDR. The Court found against a farmer growing wheat on his own land to feed his own cattle! Here’s a link :

States would be able to ban firearms under this legislation.
I wouldn't fall back to a position of states rights. The Second Amendment states the right to bear arms. The Constitution must be defended first.
