I just watched the news conference from the Navy right now.
The US Navy had convinced the pirates to let the Bainbridge take the life boat in tow! They were using the enflatable vessel to ferry food and water to the prirates so they were used to using it at that point.
They also convinced one of the pirates to board the Bainbridge and act as a go between in the negotiations. That is the one who lived.
While towing the lifeboat, apparently two of the pirates we leaning head and shoulders out of the windows, and the thrid was seen keeping his AK trained on the Captain. When the US Navy SEALS observed this and had three shots, apparently the Captain of the Bainbridge, because of the AK-47 trained on Phillips, viewed his life in extreme peril (which it was the entire time) and gave the go ahead for the Navy SEALS to take the shots...and they did so and took the three down.
I believe the Captain took the initiative. He had been ordered not to take action unless the Captain was in extreme danger and the Captain took the initiative in the circumstance when he had three shots and did so.
God bless the Captain of the Bainbridge, God bless the US NAvy SEALS, and God bless Captain Phillips and his safe return.

I concur. The Captain was in imminent peril for days. The US Navy appears to have interpreted the ROE in a manner that allowed them to act. Brave men. Unfortunately, had all not gone well, I doubt that the White House would be backing them.
Thank goodness for a bit of truth.
No doubt the Capt. of the Bainbridge will pay for his honesty.
But we honor him for saving the life of our hero.

they never denounced the pirates/terrorist/thugs
he wanted them arrested instead and it was only because the elders refused to have them arrested the capt of the bainbridge took action and gave the radar to fire
what is the betting bozo was pissed off hearing that shots had been fired and that the captain gave the orders to shoot
The captain knew the thugs would walk away and knew bozo was soft so he took it in his own hands and good for him
bozo wanted so much to prove that we could just talk and that by doing that talking is much better than shooting

I am sure there are quite a bit more details...but, I also think that what was told was excellent as a deterrent to future US hostage taking. Think about it, three terrorists, one pointing his gun at the hostage and the Seals took them out without harm to the hostage. That is the work of superheros and the world should know they are US Navy Seals!

Now THAT is how you deal with Pirates. You don’t give them money, you don’t give them food. You give them a bullet in the brain.
Pirates will think twice about hijacking another US ship now! THAT’S called getting the job done right the FIRST time. You do not negotiate with thugs, you convince them not to get anywhere near you because they KNOW they will be dead if they do.
Amen to that. The shots were only 25-30 meters. Easy shots from that distance for these guys...but had to be precise.

Obama had given the order to act if the Captian’s life was in immediate danger. The Captain used his initiative and determined it was. God bless the captain of the US destroyer.
This is one of those little reminders that if TSHTF and we all go survivalist...to avoid contact with organized militaries. Always ends badly for neo-civilians.
Frankly, I’m surprised that the SEALS didn’t shoot *up* into the life boat from underwater, using infrared or side-scanning radar to identify the bad guys.

Amen to that. Now...arm the merchant marines and have the US Navy conduct an operation to take out evry mother ship along the Somali coast.
