... she makes chicken for her children but eats Oodles of Noodles herself...
... She is 29, with twin babies and a toddler, facing eviction because she's $300 behind on rent...
... The little girl, 15-16 months old, wears a striped top that swallows her tiny arms. Her nose is runny, her eyes empty. Hers is not the picture of hunger that Americans are accustomed to seeing. She isn't emaciated, like those living in squalid conditions in famine-stricken countries, but she is underweight and malnourished, often fed chips and sugary drinks instead of milk and formula...
... poor diets lacking in fruits and vegetables, in children who are fed fatty, cheap foods like hot dogs or ramen noodles...
... Even before the economy tanked, some 36 million adults and children struggled with hunger in 2007...
... She doesn't pity herself, not when she gives her kids hot-dogs because that's all she can afford, not each and every day that she goes without breakfast. Not on this day, when she has yet to put a single morsel in her mouth. Years ago, when the hunger was almost too much to bear, she learned a trick: She'd flip through takeout menus to look at pictures of the food and, eventually, just looking was enough to diminish her cravings.
... one of her 2-year-old, his arm outstretched, asking her welfare case officer for something to eat...
... Foodstuff hidden behind piles of clothes so it's not eaten too fast....

There is a great book published back in the late 70s or early 80s named Mig Pilot, by Viktor Belenko. He was the Soviet pilot who stole the MIG-29 and flew it to japan.
After he was debriefed he was given a private aircraft to use and was allowed to travel around the US unrestricted.
The last chapter he write about our poor living better than most "middle class" people in the Communist countries and better than most everyone in third world countries.
His description of how our "poor" were fat from eating while real starving people had bloated bellies from actual starvation in many countries.
That book helped turned me completely from EVER voting for another Democrat or liberal (including RINOs) again.
We do navy beans too...I think they’re probably the favorite around here too.
Okay, bean lover, here’s one of our favorite recipes:
1 Can each (juice and all):
White Beans
Black Beans
Pinto Beans
Kidney Beans
Chicken
Diced Tomato with Green Chili
Whole Kernel Corn
Sliced Black Olives
1 package Taco Seasoning
Heat and serve with Corn Bread, Tortilla Chips, or Fritos.
Top with Sour Cream and Shredded Cheddar Cheese.
Of course, you could make the whole thing from scratch instead of canned, if you have the time.
Might as well call it Protein Soup.
From the USDA website re WIC:
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children - better known as the WIC Program - serves to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, & children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care..
There's absolutely NO reason in this country for these children to be malnourished. If these mothers are already on welfare, I don't see how they wouldn't also be on WIC.
Was he the guy who raved on the food the Japanese had brought him and asked the name of the "gourmet" restaurant, when it was in fact ordinary Japanese fast food from across the street?
(I LOVE Japanese food, weird as it is.)
Totally agree, beans and rice are a complete protein. Here’s an interesting site that tells how combining two foods can make the combination a complete protein.

There used to be a study that said an increase in childhood consumption of hot dogs led to an increase in leukemia risk. That may have been debunked.
I like a good kosher hot dog every so often, but I’ve never cooked them for a meal in 30 years of marriage (hard to believe.) My husband has an aversion to them (maybe he had too many as a kid) and my kid doesn’t like them either. I have to sneak to the deli about once a year to indulge myself.
I looked it up and you are right. Rice and beans combined do contain complete protein.
Just don’t take my hot dogs from me. I’m not one to fuss over the ingredients in processed foods. Most of what I eat is fresh and healthy, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over an occasional frankfurter with sauerkraut and chili, unless I eat it right before bed.
I have seen the stigma that city folk have put on anything resembling 'rural' for years and here we are. All the nutritional information in the world has been available basically free of charge for over 50 years through EVERY counties extension service out of their state colleges. It is all on line now also. There is no excuse.

I spent less than 15 minutes gathering this info. Search engines are our friends as are our liberaries!
In addition, these kids qualify for free breakfast and lunch, both in schools & daycares.
That leaves foodstamps to pay for dinners.
“The US has the fattest poor and hungry in the world.”
I’d say America’s “poor” and “hungry” are probably on average 40 pounds heavier than the rest of the world’s well-off and well-fed.
There, that's corrected ;-)
I really do not remember that part but I think I will search through my many book boxes and read it again.
I enjoy quite a bit of Japanese food, especially since my wife is half Japanese and a really fine cook. I don't do uncooked seafood though.
Family meant more to people in those days. There were fewer divorces, people had problems they - gasp! - WORKED THEM OUT!
Today families are so fractured that even though we have more material goods than they had during the Depression our lives are often not as fulfilling or happy. We are a throw away society to our own detriment.
I will on occasion. It's kind of like eggs over easy or rare steak- I enjoy it but I do worry.
I'd like to someday try those french fried eels I've heard about.
http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/index1.htm is a great site to learn how to eat cheap.
There’s no problem with occasional eating of processed foods like hot dogs but a steady diet is just not healthy. Welfare people are already under loads of stress - healthy eating can do a lot to actually relieve that stress. Junk food eating can get them depressed and they make poorer choices.
Also remember children tend to like the same foods their parents eat. It’s what they were raised on and what they liked. It’s a matter of habit, not of health with a lot of poor people. If that rich lady could get a nutritionist in to give free classes to these black welfare mothers and if she could teach them about alternatives to junk foods and processed foods, then maybe they can get the children trained to like healthier more natural foods right from early ages. Then that sets the stage for what they eat the rest of their lives.
Throughout history, no matter what the leftists say, women have had the upper hand in relationships and unless the man is a real nasty type, women control the relationships.
The final say regarding sex is with the woman.
My big question is if she was not married and so darn poor why was she on her back with legs open when she should have been on her feet either at school improving herself, at work, or trying to get a job.
Thanks! That looks neat too.
“We are a throw away society to our own detriment.”
That’s a fact. We even throw away our babies because they are invonvenient.
There *are* two Americas: the two-parent America, and the fatherless America.
