What this will do is force anyone who produces food of any kind, and then transports it to a different location for sale, to register with a new federal agency called the Food Safety Administration. Even growers who sell just fruit and/or vegetables at farmers markets would not only have to register, but they would be subject inspections by federal agents of their property and all records related to food production. The frequency of these inspections will be determined by the whim of the Food Safety Administration. Mandatory safety records would have to be kept. Anyone who fails to register and comply with all of this nonsense could be facing a fine of up to $1,000,000 per violation.
Ive bought food at several farmers markets for years and I have yet to meet any vendors who are fond of the government. I think its pretty safe to say that most vendors at farmers markets wont go along with this. The problem will be that the people who run the farmers markets will be forced to make sure that vendors are registered with the government.
Is this Change we can believe in? Maybe it is for Obamas Secretary of Agriculture, Tom I Fly with Monsanto Vilsack.
For the rest of us, this is a nightmare.
What is the legislation called? H.R. 875: Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009:
Tell me when and I'll show you around.
Sounds good! Thank you.
So much for those summertime lemonade stands this summer. Those kids could be fined a cool million. Then again they would be used as an example of evil capitalist influence. Then again if they keep printing more money that million could translate into a $10 fine.
The Jalepeno Kid! oh no!
LOL Exactly. Michelle is no prize. We already know her husband isn’t. I love the way they throw out what you can’t do; and they say they are going to do it. Like the vegetable garden. We all know she isn’t going to get near any vegetable garden and he isn’t going to weed except for a photo op.
NEVER thought I'd say that either, but I agree. Clinton had SOME limits even he wouldn't cross.
Neither am I.
Bring it on.
Unfortunately, all the Mexican restaurants that cause 90% of the mass poisonings don’t buy their vegetables at farmer’s markets.
And even if they did, farmer’s market vegetables aren’t genetically engineered enough to be able to force the kitchen employees to wash their hands after going to the bathroom.
If you’d like to be on or off this Upper Midwest/outdoors/rural list please FR mail me. And ping me is you see articles of interest.
The organic farming community is already up in arms over the possiblity of the OUTLAWING of so-called “HEIRLOOM” seeds. In other words - our government wants you to be able to grow ONLY genetically-altered hybrids that will NOT produce seeds for the next year... There have been a number of threads on this here at FR, but I am unfortunately not up-to-date on exactly where those proposals stand. I’m sure others on this thread can provide more information, or people can do a keyword search to find out more about that.
If there’s anything we can hope for at this point is that they’ll just keep on going. Eventually they will do something to EVERY group - including those who supported them initially. Unfortunately for the liberals, many times when these Communists achieve power they are the FIRST ONES BROUGHT TO THE CAMPS, or “DISAPPEARED”. I hope for all of our sakes people wake up...
Maybe we should just start a list of all the different parts of the Constitution our wonderful “Representatives” have COMPLETELY disregarded in the last 59 days alone?
ping
I know I’ve said this in other threads, but it occurred to me that this proposed legislation would only effect crops and livestock that were explicitly raised and sold as food. It wouldnt effect animals or plants raised for other purposes, such as wool, feathers, decorative eggs, weed control, insect control (which some breeds of poultry are QUITE good at), etc.
So, say, if you sold a dozen eggs that were specifically labeled as not for human consumption, along with instructions for hollowing out the egg and using the shell for artwork, then clearly you are not selling food. Its not your fault that your customer decided to scramble them instead.
Well, we can all rest assured that the gov will keep us safe. < /sarc> [FR thread below]
" An employee of Whole Foods Market found the Brazilian Wandering Spider Sunday in bananas from Honduras and managed to catch it in a container.
“They might find themselves shoulder to shoulder with the Amish!”
How about with us?
The idea of limited government and personal freedom could have a wide appeal, if presented properly.
By the way, I eat a lot of granola, with fresh fruit on the side. But bacon this morning...
I buy houseplants for my store and they’re shipped up from FL. We’ve had all sorts of spiders, small snakes and lizards and one cute gecko come up with them.
I can’t let a certain employee of mine unpack them; HE screams like a little girl if he sees a bug, LOL!
P.S. You can also get bit by a rattler at any southwestern Wal-Mart these days, too. ;)
ROFL! I'm not quite that bad, but I do have to admit my 3 prong hand-held cultivator went flying toward the wood pile the other day. I was digging weeds out of a bed in front of the house and discovered an impaled frog on a prong.......that was the end of that weeding expedition for the day :)

Well, I had to quit sending emails about snakes to my wife and several other females. My wife HATES snakes or pictures of snakes. I don't know if you've seen the one about the rattler that went after a mouse through a knockout plug in a breaker box, and shorted out the entire electrical box. I sent that to one gal, and she told me she almost flipped her desk upside down.
The Department of Food is an inevitability if the political class is to achieve total dominance over the people.
Need to sell from home then...
