US President Barack Obama sought to slash through decades of distrust and animosity on Friday by launching a historic appeal directly to the Iranian people, urging a resolution of differences and the launch of an "honest" engagement with Tehran.
In one of the most decisive foreign policy statements of his young tenure, Obama said Washington was committed to pursuing "constructive ties" with the Islamic republic and that Tehran could take its "rightful place" in the world if it renounced terror and embraced peace.
"My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community," Obama said in the message marking the start Friday of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year.
"For nearly three decades relations between our nations have been strained," he said. "But at this holiday we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together."
The two nations have not had diplomatic ties since 1980.

It is categorically impossible to separate Ahmadinejad's and Khameini's political goals from their Islamic eschatology. Fortunately, their beliefs are easily ascertained by the mere reading of their own numerous public statements. Unfortunately, no one in power appears capable of reading such. These two men believe with great zeal that it is their holy mission to pave the way for the Islamic "messiah," the twelfth Imam. They believe the way to carry out this "divine assignment" is to kill massive numbers of Jews and Christians in the Little Satan (Israel) and the Great Satan (USA).
They are not pursuing nuclear weapons to increase their stature on the geopolitical scene. They are pursuing nuclear weapons in order to use them against Israel and us. They have even practiced (recently) the launching of missiles off the deck of a container ship. Note to the clueless leaders of the world: It may not be a coincidence that this is probably the easiest way imaginable to launch against the USA, given the swarm of container ships inbound toward the USA at any given moment.

A guest on FoxNews seemed to say Obama was reaching out to the young people of Iran who watch YouTube.
I wonder if they even got to see the message.
YouTube was barred in Iran in 2006.
