Just saw it, and in my opinion it is a vastly over-hyped, thinly-disguised Muslim apologetic.
Coming from Hollywood, what else would you expect?
I think you are reading WAY too much into it.
Just watching the previews on that movie I would never waste a dime seeing it..Hollywood has really bad taste when they hand out Oscars..but then again there has not been one film that they have put out there in years that is good enough to get an award for..In my opinion!
Uh.. it didn't come from Hollywood.
It is an independent film.
Have not seen it, don't plan to.
There have been good movies, you are not looking. My example is “I am David.”
Is that better?
Go and see Gran Torino.
I agree with the other guy that you are reading way too much into it, however, I agree with you that the movie was over-hyped.
I saw it and I was like ‘eh’. I mean, an entire movie with no hot chicks, no karate, no explosions, no prophecy, no evil demons, no real plot twist to speak of = crap.
I read what the critics like just so I know what to avoid.
Agreed. Good movie. From the credits, I saw very few Muslim names. The entire movie was made in India by “Indians” , presumably Hindu. If the Muslim/Hindu “conflict” doesn’t bother them, it doesn’t bother me.
I live and work in Hollywood. The term “independent film” is a misnomer. Literally what it comes down to is that the producers/makers of the film sell the rights to the studios. That is the reason why Sundance is not a film fest but a sellers market for small prodn companies to sell their movie for distribution. So technically, it is a Hollywood film.
I haven’t seen it but from my reading:
1. The movie changed the name of the lead to a muslim-certain name.
2. The ‘anti-muslim’ riots were a reaction to muslim riots.
3. The book did not point out the ethicity of the lead nor did it refer to the riots as ‘anti’ anything.
My theory is that the rags-to-magical-riches nature of the lead characters were ripe for the nation that just elected the Slumdog President. My personal favorite for Best Picture was "The Reader", maybe it would have had a shot if during the credits all the actors would dance through the concentration camp, gas chambers and the ovens, like that stupid subway number at the end of "Millionaire".
You wanted to see the real India. Here it is, Jamal tells the Americans.
Well, heres the real America, the woman replies, pulling out a hundred-dollar bill for Jamal.
“I mean, an entire movie with no hot chicks, no karate, no explosions, no prophecy, no evil demons, no real plot twist to speak of = crap.”
hmm I never saw a thoughtful, well conceived movie with hot chicks, karate, lots of explosions and evil demons
From the reviews there were lots of muslims speaking Hindi. The movie was produced by the English and that is one of the reasons (among many such as the conflict, slums, crime and non-Indian stars) it didn't do well in India.
I really do not like Clint Eastwood movies the ones he acts in..I saw that preview and said I did not want to see the movie..I did however see ‘Changeling.Clint Eastwood was producer or director or both..I did enjoy that one..Angelina Jolie should have had an award for that movie..Maybe she did I never watched the Oscars..very boring..
