Normally, 80% of all arts money goes to the institutions patronized by the wealthy and connected: museums, opera, dance theater, symphony. Very little goes to individual working artists and what does is tiny individual grants that the liberal artist is just thrilled to receive.

The institutions that get the money will sponsor juried exhibitions and independent performances. They will charge the artist a fee to jury and they will charge the public attend the show and/or to see the entertainers.

The above based on 3 terms of State Arts Board peer review committee service.

Kiss passed to him. I am jealous...it must be bliss to be able to sleep so soundly and peacefully while this nightmare unfolds.

You’re absolutely right. We are struggling to keep arts programs in our local school. The music teacher, with my help, raised enough money to bring a principle violinist to do a workshop. We did it OURSELVES...w/o ‘government cheese’, thank you very much.

Try a tad bit of wine or sherry and some light broth and plain crackers. We need to keep our strength up. It’s all I could handle today and I have had this pit for weeks.

Tonight, though, hit the harder stuff. Anesthesia is good.

The RNSC spokesperson said she would pass my concerns on to John Cornyn...

Call Conryn directly?

Every sign indicates that Porkulous will be approved in both the House and Senate. Specter was my only hope but he will likely ignore the avalanche of phone calls and faxes his contituents and us have been sending him. He is pandering to his blue state people.

That’s a good idea, to call Cornyn’s office directly.

-- Thanks Cboldt --

My pleasure. Just to amplify one point, by "It isn't perfectly clear that the vote will happen today," what I mean is that there is no unanimous consent agreement to vote today. At least, there was none entered into yesterday and memorialized in the legislative calendar. Usually, when there is a contentious vote and a time on a future day is announced as to voting, there is a formal UC agreement that cements the deal.

I've more than one occasion where Reid announced a vote to take place, but no UC agreement, and some senator up and objected. There may be a fireworks show sometime after 5 p.m.

Now, my opinion is that these fireworks shows are also scripted. Reid knows full well that some GOP senator is apt to object, and by setting up a time to vote, he gives the GOP an opportunity to "really show some spine." The GOP did similar favors for the DEMS under Frist and McConnell, making public "plans" knowing they would be undercut. Having a public display of friction is necessary in order to keep the public believing that there is, in fact, deep friction. There is deep friction between some members, but easily 70-80 of the senators are on the same general page vis-a-vis making sure the federal government is powerful.

i’d suspect thats a norm for that area. i’d go so far as to say most that attempt to make a living in that field fail and move on. The 12% represents those too hard headed to find erstwhile employment.

Federal aid to the Arts is paying homage to FDR, who implemented huge Arts WPAs, so to speak.

I have a book with the programs and numbers but I’m too depressed to go find it.

Need an expresso.

I am 66 and have been a professional artist and craftsperson for 44 years. I assure you, when the orders and shows and classes are there, I work damn hard and always have. I make a living at it, too and all my wholesale accounts make a profit off the merchandise they buy.

Very little of the arts money goes to artists. When our state had $350k/yr available, back in the 80s, the art museum, the symphony and the opera in Milwaukee and Madison each got $100k grants. The remaining money was divvied between some private teaching programs, some small performance dance troupes, a prestigious juried craft show and one craftsman, one fine artist and one writer. I was the only working artist on the peer review committee.

Don’t take out your angst on the wrong people. There is an inticate web of middlemen in the arts world and it takes years to get the point where you can work without them. This is who is being gifted with tax monies.....and all of them are very comfortable and earning 6-figure salaries, for which they do less than those bankers the critters were scourging in front of the cameras.

I am not used to wine in the middle of the day. I mean no personal offense. I am venting against this looting.
