Not bipartisan? Try telling that to Sen. Olympia Snowe.
On CBSs Face the Nation Sunday, Sen. John McCain scoffed at the notion that the support President Barack Obamas stimulus proposal has received from Snowe, Sen. Susan Collins, Arlen Specter, constituted bipartisanship.
[T]his agreement is not bipartisan, McCain told moderator Bob Schieffer. I've been in bipartisan agreements, many. This is three Republican senators. Every Republican congressman voted against it in the House, plus Democrats. And all but three Republicans stayed together on this. That's not bipartisanship. That's just picking off a couple of senators.
On Monday, Snowe took issue with that view.
In a statement to Politico, she said the package represents a compromise that was established through true consensus building. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, I worked with leadership and the Obama Administration to include key job-igniting provisions in the package, such as small business expensing and a boost in the New Markets Tax Credit.
I can attest that this was certainly a give-and-take process. Our country is facing the worst economic conditions since World War II and we must not squander this opportunity to develop and enact a stimulus plan that will create jobs and help the displaced.
By focusing on the work that led to the stimulus deal, Snowe seemed to adopt the process-oriented definition of bipartisanship William Safire provides in the latest version of his political dictionary.
Bipartisanship, Safire says, is when politicians set aside differences to work together on political matters.
But can a bill be called bipartisan regardless of the process by which it came about if only three members of the opposing party support it?

HAHAHA Exactly!!!!!!!!!
And LOVED that episode. Wel, pretty much love em all.
We are in the same position, what difference does it make now. The pattern is established, dump them all off the committee assignments and let them go wherever they want. For sure the donks aren't going to give them anything important to do.
Let's move some new people up the chain, let them do some training.
There needs to be a price paid, and we need to get these people off our team.
To be fair to Ms. Susan, I honestly dont care if shes a lesbian. I think if she came clean to the Maine public most of us would just go on with our lives, but what I do care about is if shes had an affair with a married man whose wife has Alzheimers and is going on Maine radio shows to make fun of Sen. John Edwards for doing the same thing, then she needs to come clean with all of us! She needs to either deny it publicly she had this affair OR SHE NEEDS TO GO PUBLIC WITH AN APOLOGY & WITH THE TRUTH AS SEN. EDWARDS DID!
Let me guess .Collins is okay with the affair she had because she wasnt in love with him? *rolling eyes*
Only a coward would act like the Mafia to keep her little secrets from being exposed! It took a ton of courage for Sen. John Edwards to admit publicly that he had lied to us and deceived us as well. Its now Sen. Susan Collins turn to show us the same kind of courage.
I expect Sen. Susan Collins to be brave in addressing this issue, since this is the impression shes given her supporters here in Maine over the years. *cough*
If someone has the name of the wife I may be able to get verification.
See post 10.
Talk's cheap. How many decades have these slime balls been dragging the senate floor? How many times have they been propped up by the GOP to win back their seats only to screw conservatism? Remember the popular definition of insanity- Doing the same thing in repetition and expecting a different result. Watch it happen again.
That would be nice, but the problem is that the Senate is a millionaire/billionaire club. The members are too refined to display such behavior.
See post 39.
I could be wrong- and will more than happily admit it, as soon as I a few GOP senators come out and brand them as traitors to the cause. -:)
It makes a difference, but I wouldn't support a mini-porkulus just because the ACORN payback is gone.
Kill the porkulus...all of it! That's something McCain apparently didn't want to do.
Holy hundscheisse, Batman!!!
See reply #1 to this thread!!!!!
I nearly puked laughing at this!
Then they aren’t just as bad. Thanks for admitting you were wrong.
Kill the porkulus by all means but don’t pretend all sides are equal. McCain’s which was focused primarily on tax cuts was significantly better while retaining infrastructure projects. DeMint’s own bill had a price tag.
I have no problem with bolstering infrastructure projects. I had a problem with 90% of the rest of the bill.
Snowe vs McCain? I don’t have a dog in that fight. I might think more of McCain though if he had resigned his Senate seat when he accepted his party’s nomination like Bob Dole did.
The two Senators from Maine are in their own reality up there.
God help the United States!
“Our country is facing the worst economic conditions since World War II and we must not squander this opportunity to...”
...expand the size of the federal government.
WOW!! That doesn’t surprise me!
they should do to those three what tn gop did today in nashville
I don’t agree with McCain on a lot, but I do on this. The Party doesn’t own it. The Democrats do (and their three “pets”. Might as well be Demos-stuffed on the wall, and hanging and all).
What a child. Too bad his momma and grandparents didn't bring him up right. A real embarrassment to white folks. Kid turned out to be a smart mouth punk anyway.
She needs to go read this.
I keep thinking of Senator Everett Dirksen's famous quip: "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon, you are talking about real money."
