To make his point about the deadly and fearsome plague of malaria, Gates released a glass full of mosquitoes on the unsuspecting crowd at the Technology, Entertainment Design Conference in Long Beach, California. Did Gates plan on infecting some rich folks to prove his point? The answer is yes, although Gates quickly pointed out that the pests released were not malarial. Mr. Moneybags only intended to infect his audience with guilt. And guilt-inducement is the last refuge of the liberal scoundrel. It has become the go-to move for so-called progressives when intellectual argument fails and one can't muster the facts to support one's case.
One has to admit, his intentions are good. Providing paving stones on the road to hell is the ultimate moral justification for most liberal causes: results don't matter, just having significant compassion. This focus on what Ken Wilber calls Idiot Compassion enables liberal thinkers to support abortion but reject the death penalty for serial killers or to whine about the disproportion of an Israeli response to decades of terrorist attacks. Or to remain mindlessly in support of the ban on DDT when it's implementation could save millions of lives.
In this case, the good intentions of The Gates Foundation overlook the simple fact that their efforts are redundant: Malaria was nearly eradicated in the 1960's. And then came Rachel Carson and her wrong-headed book, Silent Spring.

I'm glad I stopped using his crapware a long time ago.
Rachel Carson remains the largest mass murderer in history, easily surpasssing Mao, Stalin and Hitler. Looks like Bill is going for another #1.
The man has put his own money up to save the less fortunate from this disease. What's wrong with you morons?
I hear his daddy lawyer helped start his business twisting IBM’s arms.
Funny he has no guilt of his wealth nor any guilt problem when it comes to spending/shopping guilt his crappy products.
You clearly didn’t read the article.
Bill’s actions have nothing to do with results. It’s all about misguided compassion and misguided actions.
I’m pretty sure that if AIDS were mosquito-spreadable that we’d have heard about that by now.
1 solution: DDT
If anyone is really scientificaly serious about malaria other than another releasing a squads of activists, DDT is what one would advocate.
Obama has started a trend of pulling pants down in terms of cult of guilt, off loading responsibility on the middle class and justice for and not against terrorists etc.
I read that the AIDS virus can’t pass a certain barrier in the mosquito’s body. Since the mosquito isn’t susceptable to AIDS it can’t pass it on. The west nile virus is smaller and can pass through the aidsproof barrier.
“In this case, the good intentions of The Gates Foundation overlook the simple fact that their efforts are redundant: Malaria was nearly eradicated in the 1960’s. And then came Rachel Carson and her wrong-headed book, Silent Spring.”
Her book was directly responsible for the removal of DDT as the primary weapon against mosquito borne malaria. By opting to support the non DDT approach, he has chosen elements of the eco-dweeb left...that is don’t kill the cause of the disease, treat the increased number of victims (prolonging the problem by the way).
Nope, bill could stop malaria completely, but he will pay for quinine, mosquito-bars (nets), and other bandaids.
By doing this, couldn’t Bill Gates be sued for “Assault with a dangerous bio-organism?”
I can’t see why not...
HMM, I wonder what would have happened if he pulled
a late term aborted fetus from his bag?
Who would want to risk losing a lot to the best lawyers money can buy for the world's richest multi-billionaire?
Sorry, Glenn. You and countless others forget it was the “rich” who made it possible for folks like you to survive infancy, found the vaccine for Polio, and erradicated the scurges of Smallpox and Yellow Fever. It was the “evil rich” who gave rise to the University system, medical research, and established charitable foundations dedicated to the relief of human suffering around the world. They’ve pumped untold billions of dollars into the effort, and they’ve been doing it for centuries. Bill Gates is a bit late to the game. His guilt trip is totally out of line, and reveals a breath taking ignorance of the “rich” and their contributions to humanity.
If only one man had been in the audience, Bill’s ass would have been beaten.
“The man has put his own money up to save the less fortunate from this disease. “
No, his money is stolen. From people like me.
Rachel Carson remains the largest mass murderer in history, easily surpasssing Mao, Stalin and Hitler. This fact is so startling and so big that it should disqualify all environmentalists from all policy debates. Forever.
Maybe that’s true for a mosquito, but a biting black fly leaves your neck drenched in your blood from his arms to his head and arrives at my neck not having taken a shower. I don’t buy it and never will that aids cannot be transmitted by insects.

If I was in that crowd, I’d sue him. Malaria-free, maybe. How about West Nile virus? My goodness, the mental strain and ‘trauma’ of being an unwilling particpant of such an assault is worth some $$$. (taking off my ‘lottery mentality’ hat now)
Can you imagine if any conservative pulled such a stunt?
What an idiot.
