I guess the refiners hqave found a different gimmick than refinery fires now to curtail production and jack up prices.
.... turned down the third and latest offer of a 2.5 percent wage increase....”
2.5??? Hell, I’d turn it down too. I can only imagine what they’d be getting if there were no union. Exxon reported 45.2 BILLION DOLLAR PROFIT. Fat cats just keep getting fatter with no regard for the people actually DOING the work. Tillerson’s pay in 2007 was $1.87 MILLION a year with a $3.36 MILLION bonus and 185,000 shares. NOBODY is worth that much money.
Employees don’t get to decide how much a company makes. They can only decide if they want to work there or not. If you don’t like the salary then go find a job somewhere else.

Yeah, like they were so angry when gas hit $4.75 a gallon. Workers are organized, gas purchasers are sheeple. Get ready to bend over again.
That's why they unionized...You noticed that Shell leaders were doing the negotiations for the entire industry...That means the gas producers have unionized...
Is there competition amongst the producers??? Of course not..They're a union...
The increases the employees union wants would likely result in less tha a penny per gallon increase in the cost of gas...
With countless billions in PROFIT, it ought to be clear to anyone that the workforce is not the cause of high gas prices...
Look at the retailers...They raised the price 25 cents a gallon 'just in case' there's a strike...25 cents pure profit with no justification...Talk about robbery...
Better fill her up prior to the next price jolt at the gas pumps.
Strike by 24,000 refinery workers averted for now
HOUSTON A strike by some 24,000 refinery workers was averted, at least for now, as both sides agreed to extend negotiations for at least 24 hours.
Workers at refineries near New Orleans, Houston and as far away as Billings, Mont., will show up for scheduled shifts Monday, though negotiators will be back at the table on Sunday.
“We have made progress in that there was no strike at midnight,” said Lynne Baker, a spokeswoman for the United Steelworkers, which represents more than 30,000 oil workers nationwide. “But there are still issues that need to be worked out and notice of a strike could be given at any time if that progress stalls.”
The union agreed to a rolling 24-hour extension, which allows the union to give the required one-day notice to strike.

A couple of days ago Obama said, I dont see organized labor as part of the problem. To me, its part of the solution.
Could it be any clearer that this Socialist president has his head up his A?
Exactly. I think they could hire completely new replacements and have them trained in a year. With the economy in the shape it is, these fools should lose their job. Their lucky to have a job. Ungrateful fools.
Are you nuts? 2.5% sounds like a decent payraise in this sort of economy. No one at my company is getting a pay raise this year, we’ll probably be grateful if we still have jobs at the end of 2009.
Be careful of the “nobody deserves that kind of pay” nonsense talk. At some point, someone will decide that YOU make too much.

Yep 7.5% total for the next three years may not be all that bad considering what many in the country are beginning to experience. Loss of jobs, cut back in wages or benefits, reduced work hours, etc are all signs that tough times maybe coming along. Old established union contracts in industries that have had big heydays often have built in clauses that are unrealistic in todays enviornment. I’m not advocating the approach but sometimes the President Reagan approach may be necessary.
That's pretty much a 'union truism'. Everyone knows a strike's coming and Everyone covers their needs beforehand. Strikes mean union coffers get drained, layoffs are all but certain, tensions remain, the good employees leave, repeat until business collapses and all lose jobs! If unions were a 'new thing', Odumbo & Congress might get away with EFCA. Unfortunately (or fortunately actually) Unions are an 'old thing', a dinosaur from a bygone era, when the uneducated masses could not speak or think for themselves! so they relied on union 'leadership' to solve their day to day problems. Now if you don't know someone close to you who lost their job BECAUSE of a union, you haven't lived in the USA.
No, the dims and Obama will say 24,000 more people lost their jobs.
The scariest part about unions in the private sector is the competition. A decade or so from now you’ll see no unions in the private sector (assuming card check doesn’t pass). They’ll all be in the public sector. That means we’ll never be able to live without them being forced on us by law.
They really don’t need to shut down they can just fire a bunch of union people and hire some new people, Texas is a right to work state.
Such a simple concept and yet so few people who 'claim' to look for employment understand it! Paraphrasing Peter Drucker, only Investors and Customers decide how much a company can make...not unions, employees, government, angels or any other 'group' the media invites onto your TV Screen to imply otherwise! Years of schooling won't help in understanding that unfortunately, so Academe is clueless as the media on this issue!
While I agree with your conclusion (Stupidity reigns), the unions will have no influence on the price of oil...see post 59.
