President Obama wants a fresh approach to toppling Robert Mugabe and is discussing with aides an unprecedented, US-led diplomatic push to get tough new UN sanctions imposed against the Zimbabwe regime, The Times has learned.

During talks Mr Obama has had with his top Africa advisers in recent weeks, the central idea they focused on was taking the issue of Zimbabwe before the UN Security Council, but for the first time to combine such a move with an intense diplomatic effort to persuade Russia and China not to block the initiative.

According to a senior aide present at the discussions, the goal of taking the issue of Zimbabwe to the Security Council would be to pass a series of "strong" sanctions, including a ban on arms sales and foreign investment. They also want to expand significantly the number of ruling Zanu-PF party officials subject to sanctions.

Ah the dreaded “sanctions”! Ever wonder why underground arms dealers never smuggle the feared “sanctions” into the guerrilla wars they arm and the soldiers they equip?

"...US-led diplomatic push to get tough new UN sanctions imposed against the Zimbabwe regime..."

ROTFLMAO!!! UN sancations have always been a big hit with dictators, thugs and murderers. A couple dictators have laughed so hard at the UN that they almost wet their pants.

This is one of those ‘world freedom initiatives’ to which obama will be credited. He, and the MSM, just want to put his name on it. Zimbabwe will collapse shortly on its own IMO. It’s an easy PR act to praise the ‘messiah’ with for years to come.

He should topple himself. Both are african born leaders that printed trillions of dollars ruining their respective socialist countries.

Everyone is criticizing Obama in this thread, but do they think sanctions against Zimbabwe are a bad idea? I don’t want to send U.S. troops there, but if sanctions can topple Mugabe, I favor them.

What do you think they'll accomplish? The place is a total basket case. There isn't much of an economy left. The only thing you can hit would be charitable donations -- and most of those get stolen by the ruling clique. What is the threat that sanctions pose?

When have sanctions worked? Against Sadaam we had sanctions and a no-fly zone and we still had to go in a topple him.

Sure, UN sanctions are great. Afterall, the UN has never violated any of their own sanctions before, have they?
