WASHINGTON President-elect Barack Obama will allow gays to serve openly in the military by overturning the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy that marred President Clinton's first days in office, according to incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.
The startling pronouncement, which could re-open a dormant battle in the culture wars and distract from other elements of Obama's agenda, came during a Gibbs exchange with members of the public who sent in questions that were answered on YouTube.

Welcome to Holland.
“Ill be anxious to see what enlistment/re-enlistment numbers are under him.”
They will be down. And the media will blame the military.
Hey, somebody needs to clear the mine feilds! Brings a whole new meaning to flaming!
OTOH, that may well be the point. Degrade the military to the point where it is disfunctional, or at least not as capable to fight and win wars. I don't know how that will go over with the electorate. Then again, I'm not sure I know the electorate anymore.
There. Fixed it.
How so?
There's some pretty tough lesbian Boatswain's Mates out there serving on aircraft carriers.
Wonder how it will affect enlsitments
ACU’s can hide a lot, but they can’t hide gayness.
I'm glad I'm not the only one to realize that.
This will not only hit the homosexual issue, but will make many of the current problems worse.
I was thinking about males.
Open homosexuality. Remember that Navy scandle Tail hook? Wait till the homos are roaming through the barracks and the liberals in congress have hearings blaming the Navy, like tailhook.
My question was never IF he was going to overturn it. My question was when.
This isn't the 1950s. Everybody already knows whose gay in the commands. Nobody is kicking their asses. Today's 18 year-old recruits don't see being gay as any big deal. For better or for worse, public education did its job. The typical recruit today has already seen friends, family members and co-workers come out of the closet. That's just the way it is these days. I can't imagine anyone is surprised by this.
This blows. My husband has always said he would not want to reenlist if gays were allowed to serve openly. But he only has 5 more years, so it is a waste not to stick it out.
“Retention numbers” just went way the hell south. Maybe Obama wants an army that can “swish in” and take care of real problems - like decorating questions and the like.

Defer to you by virtue of your experience. I certainly hope you are correct.
The Jihadi’s will be full of resolve. Hey, they would be right on this issue.
Everybody does. The reality is that when talking about "gays in the military", we're really talking about lesbians. I'd say at least 75%-90% of all the gays serving in today's military are lesbians. Face it, military life just isn't that appealing to prancing, lisping effeminate men. Butch, masculine lesbians, on the other hand, find the rigors of military life just what they're looking for and line up in droves to serve. They are the ones getting kicked out for being gay. They are the ones who will be able to serve openly when this policy changes (even though, in many cases, their individual sexuality has been no secret).
I've done carrier deployments and I could tell you some stories...
well I served until recently and still have many friends in and know of not one who supports this and I talked to one guy to night who is waiting to be deployed
his words
If that is the case then I am getting the hell out.
I said this on another Post but my two sons wanted to follow in my footsteps ands they have said they will not join if it is the case
