THE HAGUE, 17/12/08 - The Netherlands will boycott the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) if the anti-Semitic tone in the texts for the draft resolution is not removed, said Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen yesterday on Radio 1.
The UN conference takes place in Geneva next April. Verhagen will still make proposals for altering the texts in two preparatory meetings. If this does not succeed, the Netherlands will withdraw.
According to Verhagen, some Islamic countries misuse the UN for anti-Semitic mud-slinging. "It all again only appears to be about the branding of Israel and the condemnation of Western countries because of their past of slavery and colonialism."
The pro-Israeli small Christian party ChristenUnie had called on the government to stay away from the conference. Canada and Israel have already withdrawn, while the US is still in doubt. Verhagen, too, does not want to close the door already now.
"The Netherlands dearly wants to give the signal that discrimination on grounds of faith, race, political conviction and sexual disposition is not allowed," according to Verhagen. It is "bitter" that a conference on combating racism actually gets bogged down in racist language. "We want to seize all chances of combating racism and discrimination, but we are not lending ourselves to a propaganda circus. I will not participate in anti-Semitism."
The WCAR is a followup of a meeting in 2001 in Durban, South Africa. That conference also turned out tempestuous for the same reasons. Israel and the US then resigned. The final text then contained compromises, where the obnoxious passages against Israel no longer appeared.

Oh joy, the Dutch are now the last bastion of morality!
We had better do the same.
With Barky, I just don’t know if we will.
Are women and whiskey part of the hospitality?
Who gets paid to think up this kind of drivel? Do such people get paid six figures? Seven?
Where can I apply for such a job? I bet I can think of idiotic things to waste time and money. Why would countries pull out as long as they have chump taxpayers? Just send participants who are REALLY lucky and have them skip the sessions. Tell them to see the sights and take lots of pictures.
...the WCAR is not about racism at all...it’s about brown skinned peoples self proclaimed “right” to live anywhere they choose on the planet.
They are ultra liberal in some instances, yet one of the most pro-US, pro NATO, and trust worthy European allies we have. You can count on the Dutch, they put their money/blood where their mouth is.
LOL. We should not look a gift horse in the mouth (whatever that means). They seem to be waking up from their drug party.
Sounds reasonable to me. If some representative or group inserted racist language then that representative or group must be the racists. Pretty simple, actually.
Sooo, who or what inserted the no-nos?
Timothy Mcveigh Hhit the wrong address in the wrong state.

No kidding? I hope we don't simple "express doubt", but also withdraw.
Still, that sounds like even odds to me.

Israel, Canada, the Netherlands. Three countries get it.
I’m glad Israel and Canada aren’t participating in this hatefest. But, with “Osama” Obama in the WH, chances of the US joining those two are slim.
No problem with the Muslim countries and their ongoing slavery and colonialism!
What kind of "World Conference Against Racism" turns around and touts their anti-Semitism? The UN is the most blatantly hypocritical bunch of chumps I've ever seen.
Given that in the Netherlands during WWII, the highest proportion of Jewish citizenry of any European country died in the Holocaust, the Netherlands bears historical and moral responsiblity to know and act on the danger of governments and every day citizens’ complicitiy and silence in the face of anti-Semitism.
