JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israel can no longer expect "blank cheques" from Washington once president-elect Barack Obama's administration takes over in January, a former US ambassador to the Jewish state said on Sunday.
"The era of the blank cheque is over," said Martin Indyk, director of the Centre for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institute who is considered close to incoming secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
"The Obama administration intends to be engaged, using diplomacy to try to bring about a safer and more peaceful place, that is different from the seven years of the (George W.) Bush administration," he said on public radio.

Honestly, in terms of actually FIXING problems, Israel used to be tremendously effective. The 1967 and 1973 wars, the bombing of the iraqi reactor - where is that country now?

What I do find troubling is how the new president intends to approach the major global problem of the rise of radical islam. I am aware of no specific opinion at all from the guy.

Israel stood down the Intifada twice, and bombed the Syrian reactor. Israel is still there.

Biblically speaking, I agree with your comments. That doesn’t mean that it couldn’t come to severe harm while other nations shirk their duty to support Israel. I’m sure you’ll agree this goes beyond Israel per se. Israel is not trying to dominate any other people. They have long standing hatreds in the area that go back thousands of years. That’s the long and the short of it. A nation like ours should defend any small nation against what Israel is facing. I do say that with the understanding that Israel is a nation that allows it’s citizens to select it’s leaders and how it is run. As a republic, it should be defended.
It isn’t “screw” your friends. Iran is Obama’s friend.
Israel has stated many times that it will defend itself with all means at its disposal ... if it means nuking Syria and Iran then they’ll do it ... but I believe it will be as a last resort - short of being overrun by Islam .... if Carter was in office at the time of the 1973 Yom Kippur war (or as Islam called it The Ramadan War) there would have been a nuke strike because Carter hates Israel .... Nixon saved it at that time with mass supplies of tanks and arms.
Obama scares me regarding Israel ... he’s pro-Muslim ....
From what I heard obama got most of the Jewish vote and Israelis called their relatives in the U.S. urging them to vote for him.

Yes, he makes no bones about the fact he doesn’t favor Israel. It’s one of the reasons why I did not want to see him become our President. He is unfit to hold the office. And the nation is about to get a four year object lesson why.
