The teenager behind a "Kick a Ginger" group on Facebook is being investigated by police after reports of attacks on redhead children.
Nearly 5,000 people joined the online campaign which urged members to "get them steel toes ready" for a day of booting this week.
The website appears to have been inspired by a recent episode of the cartoon South Park, in which a young character called Cartman describes people with red hair as evil and soulless.
Dozens of children left messages on the page claiming to have carried out attacks on "National Kick a Ginger Day" on Thursday, and a girl in Alberta, Canada claimed that she and her 13-year-old sister were punched and kicked by pupils at their school.
The 14-year-old boy from Vancouver who ran the Facebook group has apologised and insisted that it was only meant as a joke, but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has launched an investigation and warned that those involved could face charges.
"We do treat this sort of thing seriously," a police spokeswoman told the Vancouver Sun newspaper. "This is sort of inciting hate. It's a hate crime, really."

It’s about time the adults of this world start their own campaign.
Shoot a facepunk!
“Social networking sites are particularly attractive to young people with no identity of their own, who are seeking a peer group to tell them who they are. In this case, identify so strongly with an in-group that they rationalize physically attacking an out-group.”
Thanks. I never thought of it that way. It makes sense.
Man I married a Rednut - best thing I ever did. Yes she’s fiesty but manages to keep it to behind closed doors :)
Mel
Because she looks kind of mean - like that angry ex-wife who is about to go psycho on you. ;)
I liked her in the one episode of "Firefly" she was in, though...
Time for Kick Cartman Month.
HAY!! I resemble that remark!!
Precisely!...:))
Did you happen to see him on ‘Gene Simmon’s Family Jewels’?
He looks like he could rip telephone poles in half, never mind telephone ~books~.
[the new ‘Joan Crawford’ eyebrows are a bit much, though]
She played that kind of ex-wifey character on the series The O.C. But on CSI, she played the bondage madam turned psychologist.

Indeed, red hair is beautiful. But, its historical/cultural significance seems to have varied in different parts of the world. In some places, it was considered a sign of evil/Satan. Of course, today we know that notion is silly. And, yet, some people apparently are still so silly that they would launch a "kick a ginger campaign" and actually followed-through with it. So, how far has the human race really progressed, we must wonder?
L'Oreal, 6R Medium Auburn :)
What a lovely distraction in the middle of the night.
I preferred Mary Ann but I could have made do with Ginger, if she really asked me nicely!:)
