Canandaigua, NY--Local shoppers have been watching their grocery bills increase for months, but some relief is on the way.
In anticipation of lower fuel and production costs, Wegmans has cut prices on hundreds of items, with reductions ranging from 10 to 30 percent.
Signs will go up today and over the weekend pointing customers to the lower-cost items, said spokeswoman Jo Natale.
In a message posted on the company Web site, owners Danny and Colleen Wegman said the price cuts were made in anticipation of Wegmans’ costs falling in the future. They said they don’t mind making a little less money during difficult times.
While gas prices are down, along with the cost of corn, wheat and soybeans, food prices have remained high. Wegmans and other companies locked into contracts when costs were up out of concern that they’d go even higher, the company said.
The Wegmans price cuts are expected to save consumers $12 million a year, or $40 to $60 a month for an average family, Natale said.

I found the black oil sunflower seed cheaper at Wal-Mart, but has quit buying the stuff altogether.
I got sick of feeding the squirrels, who hung on the birdfeeders and stuffed themselves silly. I was filling them up every two days or so and the birds hardly got any.
I switched to thistle seed, which the songbirds like just as well and the squirrels don’t. Although it’s more expensive, I don’t go through nearly as much. I’ve had one bag last me months now and had plenty of goldfinches and other songbirds around.

You know that that is the biggest store in the chain with their recent renovations.
I love to shop there, but won’t unless it’s early on a weekday morning or late on a weekday evening. Just too much of a madhouse otherwise.
Whole Foods has this liberal look and feel, but they have strongly resisted unionization. They are the best place here to find organic foods which my family has switched to since I contracted a serious illness. They are really a contradiction in terms, a source of a great product and a serious capitalist that supports lefty-flavored causes. Even those they support are charities and not government sponsored.

Yes. My husband has taken a strong dislike to TJ’s for some reason. Maybe because their organic food is such slim pickings.
I want to grow food ourselves as well as subscribe to a Community Supported Agriculture organic farm near Madera. I guess we’ll see.

you can’t find that wonderful marble rye bread out here in the west....Wegmans has a lot of quality and its a joy to shop at..yes, a little pricey..
