McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

The “typical voter” didn’t even know a debate was scheduled Friday night.

I wonder if the “debate” will proceed with Oprah’s Obama getting the full air time to pontificate on his role as the new “American Messiah”.

JOhn McCain’s address to the Senate in 2005, when he was trying to get an oversight bill to rein in Fannie and Freddie actually shows you don’t have a clue.

How successful was that? Why do you think they can fix something in a few days that they've not been able to fix in the past three years?

If you'd like, we can all live in the past. We can pretend it's 2005 and John McCain is leading us in the fight against companies making idiotic decisions.

The problem is, it's not 2005. It's the end of September in 2008 and it's two days before the biggest debate of McCain's political life.

MHGinTN - what you or I or anybody reading this thread thinks - none of that matters, because at the end of the day, you and I and everybody reading this thread will still vote for McCain, but the people who are undecided, the moderates, the independents, they are going to see Obama up there saying a President should be able to do more than one thing at a time.

They aren't going to see Obama saying "UUUHHHH" and "ERRRR" and "UUUMMM" during a debate.

The undecideds, the moderates, and the independents are going to ask themselves why it looks like McCain pulled a fire alarm to get out of a debate.

It's hard, but you need to step back and look at how this looks to the group of voters who will decide this election, the group of voters who McCain and Obama have been chasing for months now, even before they were the formal candidates.

Stop looking at this through the eyes of a Republican or a Conservative, because if you don't understand how this will play out to that group of people, then you will be in for a shock come this January when Barrack Hussein Obama is sworn in.

I think you’re right. Impulse reaction on this is hugely pro-Obama. Then again, Mccain had to do SOMETHING. This economy news is killing him in the polls.

Please make it so.

Unless he finds that he can do nothing when he gets back to Washington.

The typical voter was much more oriented toward the debate than the financial crisis.

I think you are very wrong. Other than political junkies, NO ONE is interested in the debate, but EVERYONE who has even caught a glimpse of the news or a newspaper in the past week or two is up in arms over the financial situation. the most APOLITICAL people in the universe are on tenterhooks about the financial situation.

Respectfully I would say to you that I’m not naive, I acutally work in the mfg sector. I do understand how economics work. I, however, like John McCain said a week ago believe in the fundamentals of our economy, but now he needs to rush back to Washington?

This is exactly what I was thinking: we’re supposed to believe that a guy who was at death’s door in a North-frickin-Vietnamese prison for 5-1/2 years, 2 in solitary-fooking-confinement, is AFRAID TO DEBATE some chicago punk?!?!

Bwaaa-haaa-haaa-haaa!

IMO, he ought to come right out and say this, bluntly.

“The “typical voter” didn’t even know a debate was scheduled Friday night.”

But I think the typical voter who doesn’t keep up with politics much, the one thing many of them might still do is watch the presidential nominees debate. Those debates get large audiences. If a voter doesn’t bother to watch those, they probably just vote based on the preference of the groups they identify with.

- Obama says “If they need me I’ll go to Washington”
- What a clown.
* If that’s his words and attitude...then I’m really
* worried about a 3 AM call. This guy is NOT the right
* stuff. He is ALL THE WRONG STUFF for president.

There is also an implied dis. McCain did not ‘run away’ from Obama, he bailed on him. He basically said “Hey. I got more important things to do on Friday than chat with you. We’ll reschedule”.

Obama is an idiot. He’s running for PRESIDENT. Washington is supposed to be HIS TOWN. There is no “call me if you need me”. You want to be President? Act like a President! If you want to go, go. Don’t ask for permission. Act like its your damn town.

Do or no do. There is no try.

I agree with you!!! It doesn’t look well at all with Undecides or Independents, especially in light of how the MSM will spin it.

Hey, Letterman!

Obama better get his a$$ to DC and have an impact on a $700 BILLION BAILOUT for HIS FRIENDS at Freddie and Fannie. I'm from Chicago and I am mad as heck about bailing out Ivy Leaguers who eff’d up the economy with their “creative structures”.

Letterman, just because you are an imbecile DOES NOT mean the rest of America, you know the ones who do not watch your crappy show, are imbeciles. I bet Letterman, you don't even know who the heck was running Freddie and Fannie for the past 10 years. I bet you don't know about the 2005 bill that your IVY LEAGUE Buddie, Obama voted against. There is a reason I don't watch your show Letterman. You are not funny and you are an idiot.

TODAY: Obama added, “With respect to the debates, it’s my believe that this is exactly the time the American people need to hear from the person who in approximately forty days will be responsible for dealing with this mess..."

Would-be Emperor Obama thinks he'll be sworn in as President on Nov 5th?

A dictionary, why do people have to state their point while trying to be degrading. It’s amazing to me from conservatives. I think it’s a knee jerk reaction. He only a week okay stated the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but now he needs to run back to Washington? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL ~~~rolls eyes~~~ dumbass people always use degradation to try and make themselves feel better and to prove their point.

I haven’t had time to go through the whole thread, so this might have been covered already, but wouldn’t it be sweet if last-minute, Gov. Palin stepped to the podium and debated vice Sen. McCain.
