McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Dave will be yucking it up when his advertisers start to run out of funds for commercials when most people are asleep.

I agree, and not only does McCain look like a leader right now, this is one of those cases that 3-4 weeks down the line, after the crisis has passed, he can then slip back into campaign mode, and remind the American people that he was ready to lead while Obama said, "They will call me if they need me". I wonder if that will be a 3AM phone call?

This will either be sheer brilliance, or a bump in the road. Either way, it endears me to McCain in a way I didn't think possible.

Yeah I’m sick of Bush’s domestic blunders (except tax cuts.)

McCain can’t be much worse, and probably a better War President.

It’s either the war hero or the terrorist sympathizer! I’ll take McLame with a smile on my face!

In your ignorance you show you are either an agent for Obama or just inept. JOhn McCain’s address to the Senate in 2005, when he was trying to get an oversight bill to rein in Fannie and Freddie actually shows you don’t have a clue. But you keep showing us what a fool for Obama can say. It is amusing ...

Some of them are so upset about the huge missteps Barry is making, that they can’t now even help blatantly outing themselves. They’re too upset to be careful.

No it wouldn’t. He suspended his campaign in order to go do the job he’s paid to do. Palin isn’t a US Senator, she can’t go vote in the Senate, so she has every right to continue to campaign.

I wish McCain didn't make any announcement, and just showed up in Washington today, rolled up his sleaves, and then stated “Let's put this mess in proper order.”

Right now McCain, Barama and Biden are Senators and our employees. I suggest they all get their asses back to D.C. and get to work for us. Barama, IMHO, is going to show just how poorly he can handle a crisis, especially one started by his party and surrogates.

McCain is not only a US Senator but as the presidential candidate the defacto leader of the Republican party.

The Republican Senators are almost unified in opposition of the “plan”.

To broker a deal someone has to show the leadership and resolve to bridge the differences.

You cannot do this long distance, you have to be there working with both sides. As critical as this issue is to the US financial system and the world, someone needs to show leadership.

Is there a political component, of course. But this issue is not whether a Agriculture bill passes but an issue that will literally affect the future of America.

Some issues require direct involvement and cannot be handled while traveling via jet or at a debate.

This issue transcends all other bull$hit....

McCain needs to reply to this “afraid to debate” BS with that point, that Bambi turned down numerous offers to debate in townhall settings, where he wouldn’t have a helpful media moderator and would have to face real Americans. McCain’s campaign needs to make ads pounding that point, if Barry wants to go there.

Not only did he cancel being a Senator, HE’S STILL TAKING A PAYCHECK FOR IT!

How nice to get paid for something when you aren’t even showing up for work! Where can I get one of those?

Both McCain and Obama are ON THE TAXPAYER’S PAYROLL!!! At least McCain can remember that! Obama seems to have forgotten that little detail.

I think McCain ought to REMIND him of that. Obama should otherwise be forced to give up his senate seat, the one he hasn’t been in or voted “Present” in for for the last few years....

Good point. They are both still being paid to serve. Only one puts the good of the country before their own political aspirations. (BTW, whether this is a campaign move or not - it's brilliant. It shows the difference between one who wants to lead vs. one who just campaigns.)
