I think you’re right. Impulse reaction on this is hugely pro-Obama. Then again, Mccain had to do SOMETHING. This economy news is killing him in the polls.

Many of the people in this thread have lost sight of this - whatever McCain does, the GOP base and even most Conservatives, will still vote for him - we have made our peace with him being the candidate (and we sure as hell don't want Obama).
Given how close 2000 and 2004 elections were, the undecideds become even more important, and given that many undecideds are turned off by President Bush (and Obama plays upon that with the "four more years" crap), McCain needs a Karl Rove more than ever - somebody who understands how to attract those people.
