McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

“He tried to cancel the debate.”

No. He. Did. Not.

Chill, Nick. This isn’t like you.

Foreign policy is supposed to be his strength and now he wimped out, so it looks like he is scared of Obama and weak?

This is like my neighbor saying I wimped out on a pool game and doing a victory dance because my house is on fire and I decided fighting it was more important than playing a game.

Worth REPEATING.

Deflation = Great Depression II
It needs to be repeated. Not to scare people, but to let them know just how serious this crisis is.

The real estate collpase is taking trillions of dollars out of our economy. We can’t really borrow any more. Printing hundreds of billions creates other serious problems.

I hope the adults in Washington are able to figure this out. A debate should be the least of their worries right now.

What people seem to fail to realize is that MOST businesses rely on credit. They do not have a pile of cash sitting around doing nothing. They have ASSETS to borrow against. If something — a Moody’s or S&P rating or something systemic — causes those ASSETS to be viewed with skepticism, then that business can be bankrupted in short order.

The current situation is that mortgage ASSETS that have real value — with real land and real buildings mortgaged — are being valued at ZERO by a market that is nonfunctional. This sort of systemic problem has already ruined Bear Stearns, Fannie and Freddie and AIG — as well as wiping out half the value of Bank America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, etc. If left alone, it will ruin the rest of the financial industry and then it will ruin manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, etc. as nobody will be available (and willing) to lend the money needed to do capital improvement and even short-term operating expenses. Home Depot doesn’t pay its suppliers cash on the barrelhead — it expects the supplier to extend it credit and pay its bill 30 - 60 days later. We are on the brink of those suppliers refusing to do that because they can’t get the short term lending to produce the products it is supplying. When Paulsen says it will “cost more if we don’t do this”, that is what he’s talking about.

Is it me or are there a lot of trolls out today — McCain must have hit a nerve as I have read some of the dumbest statements.

Priorities is correct!

I’m not being hysterical, but maybe McCain is. It’s going to look wimpy to most people. He tried to cancel the debate.

But he didn't. McCain asked that Obama DELAY the debate, not cancel it, so that both of them could work to solve a full-fledged crisis rather than attend a political event. McCain showed true leadership; Obama is still playing poltics.

If you are able, you’ll realize my response is the corollary of your presumptuous post.

I know what speech sounds like when delivered through a paper anus.

McCain has BRILLIANTLY pigeon-holed Obama...

And Obama responds with “If you need me, call me”???

TRUE LEADERSHIP, versus an inexperienced wanna be.
This one is going to leave a mark.

Speaking of Barry, where was he staying in Florida? Wasn’t it some fancy hotel with the name Biltmore in it? Gee, that was mighty egalitarian of him.

HE DID NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT TRY TO CANCEL THE DEBATE. MCCAIN STILL WANTS THREE DEBATES [AND MORE] WITH OBAMA. HE JUST WANTS TO DELAY THE FIRST DEBATE UNTIL AFTER THIS WEEKEND SO THAT THIS URGENT BILL GETS OUT OF CONGRESS. PRESIDENT BUSH WILL PROVIDE PLENTY OF AMMUNITION TONIGHT WHY TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE AND WHAT IS AT STAKE.

Just watched Obomba. He sounded a whole lot better then McCain did today, and he made a lot of sense. We vote in 40 days. Unless we delay the election, the campaign needs to go on. This was a huge mistake for him. He should fire the guy who came up with this lame gimmic.

Ignore him. This newbie's been reading Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" which advises them to get in our face. Responding empowers them. If they get too bad the mods will flush him.
