McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

People are missing the fact that McCain is wisely lowering expectations relative to his debate performance.

And I have every expectation that McCain will show up on Friday night. And win the debate.

If markets go sour in the meantime, he can tell the American people, I told you so.

Use the freepin' spellcheck. It's gimmick.

How has McCain wimped out? There will still be a debate, and his foreign policy knowledge will still be some strong kung fu. Don’t be hysterical.

More Buchanan: Barry’s in a box. This was a brilliant, risky move, it addresses the economic concerns people have right now.

“I think he just cut Obama off at the pass.”

He did, and most people here are missing it. In Political Chess, McCain just pigeon-holed Obama, and has him in check.

Does Obama believe in COUNTRY FIRST? Or Campaigning first.

This post seems to sum up the schizophrenic reactions to the announcement. It was a brilliant political tactic to claim that the suspension wasn't political. Or, by announcing that politics should be put aside, McCain has politically outmaneuvered Obama and will garner a big political boost.

There's a risk that folks won't cotton to this kind of cynical spinning and will view the suspension as, well, just a political gimmick.

How can Sarah Palin continue speaking? It is McCain’s campaign that has been suspended. They are a combined ticket. She will have to stop campaigning as well.

Hannity was explaining that 54% poll this afternoon....the ABC poll (?) I think yer speaking of stated they had over sampled both democrats and black voters and under sampled republicans and independents.

This poll was crap if we’re speaking of the same one.

Another point I make to all here.......

Obama says a president should be able to multitask........BHO ya ain’t a president. Your a Senator and YOUR SUPPOSED to DO THE JOB YOU WERE VOTED TO DO !

If you can’t do the job of a senator due personal business and greed of running for president .....then you out yourself as the POS ya are.

Doom on ya Obama ! You just showed yer true colors & blinked !

Barry's Ballad

You just call out my name and you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again.
Winter, spring, summer or fall
all you got to do is call
and I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.

It's tonight, not tomorrow.

My mistake - he's speaking at the Clinton's event tonight but suspending his campaign tomorrow.

Still, my point stands - if the economy is important enough to miss the Presidential debate Friday, it's important enough to skip out on the Clinton's tonight. McCain maybe loyal to his friends, but they are still Clintons in the end and they still understand politics and wouldn't be upset.

Obama thinks it is all about HIM, not the country. He is crying about being able to do two things at once. Obama you mr.partisian, care nothing about our country!

Meanwhile John McCain can't campaign because a few companies made some bad decisions (but he can still make time to speak at the Clintons' event tomorrow).

You are clueless about what is really at stake in this crisis. Even Obama admitted that it was similar to the Great Depression. Watch the Bush speech tonight and see what he has to say about it and the urgency of needing to act.

It is my understanding that the Clinton event is tonight.

“You should be suspending your campaign indefinitely, and marching your feeble ass before a grand jury indictment. They should find you guilty of high crimes against the United States and throw your ass in a prison cell! HOW F**KING DARE YOU C**KSUCKER!”

Sheesh. And they say Ann Coulter is a angry bitch.
