Preparing for the "Big What if": Buying a gun
WaPo & Free Republic ^ | Sept 15, 2008 | Joe Brower

Posted on 09/15/2008 10:58:51 AM PDT by Kevmo

The Washington Post article is already being commented upon here in Free Republic.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/12/AR2008091202414

The purpose of this thread is to help Freepers and lurkers decide upon what the best mode of self defense would be in the case of the breakdown in social order such as happened with the Rodney King riots.

Joe Brower owns one of the RKBA (Right to Keep and Bear Arms) ping lists. I tried to convince him to open this vanity because he and his friends are more knowledgeable about guns. He says, "there have already been threads on the subject you mention right here on FR, although I can't locate them now. Tell you what -- you start the thread and then ping me, and I'll then flag my RKBA list for comments. I'm sure some folks in that group would be able to provide links, as well as plenty of timely advice. "

This scenario is called the SHTF scenario, where the acronym stands for $#|+ Hits The Fan. So this will be the SHTF gun thread for November 2008... Of course, gun ownership isn't for everyone. But it is the most accessible safety measure under our constitution, which is as our founding fathers intended. Recall where the police were when the Rodney King riots started: they left the scene for their own safety. If that were to happen in your neighborhood, what is your plan?

Oops - I posted before pointing out that the revolver and the carbine are in .357 magnum. The advantage to that is that you can practice with the much cheaper and lower recoil .38 special ammunition in the same firearms, although you may find the aimpoint between the two will need to be adjusted at ranges greater than about ten meters.

You can get more power out of larger calibers - the .44 magnum, for example - but pretty soon you're having training issues with recoil control in the handgun although it shoots just fine from the carbine. Best advice is try it until you find a combo you like.

Get a rifle that shoots an easy to obtain caliber. Make sure when you buy it, its not one that requires paperwork.

All guns purchased from a licensed dealer require paperwork, both the BATFE "yellow form", and an instant background check. The IBC can be avoided if you have a CHL/CHP from most states.

Any high cap semi auto rifle in .223 or better.

Shotguns and pistols are nice for what they are but high powered rifle with large cap mags are what folks who go out seeking fire from the enemy use.

I would heed from observing them.

Bushmaster makes decent stuff not too expensive.

Bargain stuff would be SKS surplus...try for East Bloc.

the guy I pinged will know better specifics

have lots of ammo...at least a few thousand rounds if you expect any action of length

try to find tapes of folks from LA to other hotspots to see what they used

I would only have the pistol...in .40 or up (except .357) for my person or home/car

no question for real urban defense of duration...a decent longarm with power

it’ll come down to ammo weight versus knockdown, car door issues

that question is never ending.....for short range I’d opt for .223 for ammo weight

i could be wrong
if you were on farm, I’d say larger caliber and maybe even a nice bolt as well

If price is an issue, an SKS rifle is fairly cheap (I saw them for under $200 at a gun show three months ago), 7.62x39 ammo is fairly cheap ($127 for a 500 round case), and is a demonstrated man-stopper.

And they are easy to shoot, so a neophyte might actually practice with one. It was my first centerfire anything. Don't shoot it much anymore, I find my M1 Cargine to be more fun, but they are much more expensive. YMMV.

The Henry is way more expensive than need be. The HOWA PUMA in 16” barrel with .357 mag is ~$470.

$69 AFTER REBATE Regular Price $179.99 thru Sep 21 ‘M91/30’ RUSSIAN MOSIN NAGANT BOLT-ACTION RIFLE $20 Instant Rebate!

The Mosin Nagant would take down a Moose, but it also kicks like one. :)

Dang though, wish there was a Big 5 nearby, since a Mosin-Nagant is on my wish list, has been ever since I fired one (actually two different ones, plus an SVT) while I was on travel to Florida, where one of the folks we were visiting was the secretary of the local gun range, and liked old military rifles. :) ) I have the target from that episode hanging on the wall behind my desk at work, along with two 7.62x54R spent catridges. (From the SVT, the owner kept the Mosin-Nagant brass for reloading, but the SVT beat the brass up pretty badly).

I’ve had two open heart surgeries and my sternum and cervical vertebrae are perm fubar....eat up with spurs and arthritis and chest wall irritation crap.

I know my way around muscle relaxers and pain killers too. Sometimes that’s all that works...I don’t drink or smoke dope.

Beats the alternative after lifetime of a DNA bad pump.

Folks talk about depression after heart surgery...hell I never felt so happy and horny and thrilled to be alive. Guess I was lucky. There’s folks on this thread who know me personally and they know I’m not lying. Man, 30 years ago I’d a been a dead man at 45.

Good luck pardner...I think you’ll be fine shooting anything up to 600 Nitro Express.

The .12 gauge is just too heavy and unwieldy in an emergency. I know it’s not a huge weapon, but I am little and arthritic.

Then consider a 20 gauge, or even a .410. With an 18.5" barrel, and maybe a pistol grip stock (not just a pistol grip, but a shoulder stock with a pistol grip), and they can be pretty light and handy.

This is what I want for Christmas. I am currently saving up for a trip to National Gun Day next March. But for now, I am thinking about heading up to their show the weekend after next to see if I can find a Romanian or Polish SKS for a reasonable price (I wouldn't mind a Soviet, but they are way too expensive for a plinker).

I think I’ll invite my sister to come down for dinner on election night. I don’t think anything will happen in Cincinnati, but you can never tell.

Real blacks, middle-class folks who got jobs and families aren't going to be out in the streets

of course not, althought their teenaged kids *might* be. However not all blacks are middle class. Many, not a majority though, are welfare class, those are the folks who might take to the streets. They certainly did in '68 when MLK was shot and killed.

I do like that option. Can you fire regular cheap .22 rounds through a .223 rifle like that?

Only if you buy a special adapter, which will cost almost as much as a semiautomatic .22 rifle. But there are advantages to practicing with the same rifle you'll be using if/when the SHTF.

Back in the '70s and '80s, and maybe still today in some cases, even the military used such adapters in M-16s for practice and qualification for non line types, like moi.

But with a shotgun, in a highly intense and nerve wracking situation, even if you don’t score a direct hit, odds are very, very high that you will strike and wound the target - and that by itself might be enough to buy you the valuable few seconds you need to survive.

Much experience with shotguns? I can miss an entire covey of quail, several times, and that's not nearly so "intense and nerve racking", although it is both. And that's throwing lots of little shot (usually 7 1/2). You can miss with a shotgun, but it doesn't take too much practice to make it unlikely with a cylinder "coke" and at across the room range. But even at that range, it's better to shoulder the weapon and use your entire upper body to point the weapon, rather than fire from the hip. (Although that is kind of fun, as anyone watching Humblegunner's "Third Annual Texas Cowboy Memorial Shoot" video can see. That's me, the second shotgunner, shooting from the hip with the Maverick Serious social purposes shotgun. The goat thought it was funny as heck though.)
