Social conservatives hail McCain’s choice

Conservative Republican prayers for the November 4 presidential election may have been answered.

John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate sends a clear message to the party's conservative religious base: God and guns are on the ticket.

Conservative Christians and analysts say the 44-year-old devout born-again evangelical and mother of five has the "right stuff" to energize this base, from her staunch opposition to abortion to her passion for hunting and fishing.

She has a compelling personal narrative for religious conservatives capped by the fact that she opted to have her fifth child even though she knew he would have Down's syndrome — making her a darling of the anti-abortion movement.

These credentials have been added to the Republican ticket at a time when polls show McCain, a 72-year-old veteran senator from Arizona, gaining ground with the white evangelical Protestants who are key to Republican electoral success.

McCain and Palin will face Democrat Barack Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden, and polls show a close race. Obama would be the first black president if elected, Palin the first female vice president.

Despite his consistent opposition to abortion and attendance at an evangelical church, McCain has been criticized in conservative Christian circles for his support for stem cell research and his failure to back a federal ban on gay marriage, among other issues.

"It's a strategically brilliant development for McCain. He ... desperately needed to woo evangelical voters," said Michael Lindsay, a political sociologist at Rice University in Houston and leading expert on US evangelicals. "No Republican has captured the White House in modern history without their support." About one in four US adults count themselves as evangelical Protestants. The vast majority regard the Bible as God's literal word and take their faith very seriously.

The movement has been fracturing as some leaders broaden their agenda to embrace "liberal" issues such as protecting the environment but many evangelicals still care deeply about abortion and gay rights, which they ardently oppose.

Conservative Christians said they were excited by her addition to the ticket. "Governor Palin is an outspoken advocate for pro-family policies that energize social conservatives. She has a record of advancing the culture of life at every opportunity," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a conservative lobby group with strong evangelical ties.

"Senator McCain made an outstanding pick ... She's solid on all the core social issues," he said. There had been concern among evangelicals that McCain would choose an abortion rights supporter like former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge or Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman as his running mate in a bid to appeal to moderate voters.

Palin's status as a "working mom," whose children range in age from 5 months to 18 years, could be one drawback in the eyes of some conservative US Christians who strongly believe that a mother's place is in the home. But others give her credit for being a devoted mother who they say has been able to balance career and family. "I have five kids too and I think it is exciting when you see someone who is working actively to make her family a part of her mission," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life Action, an anti-abortion group.

Palin also can help the Republicans target gun owners as she is a member of the National Rifle Association.

Note: The slogan was originally posted to FR by Renfield. Islander7 created the graphic. I've merely taken the initiative in publicizing it. It's so good, it may well be the "Sore/Loserman" of the 2008 election.

Apparently there are college courses on "US evangelicals." I don't know whether to be amused or offended.

What do you expect atheist, vegetarian, fringe left lunatics to do when that huge mass of Americans in fly-over country rally around God, country, honor, duty, guns, guts, the flag, the sanctity of marriage between a man and woman, our patriots in the military, and the right of the people to reject the yoke of a society and a government controlled by the fringe left lunatics. They go nuts like red ants when you pour gasoline on them...

The whole hunting thing is tearing the DUmmies apart!

It’s hunters vs vegans/PETAs!

The fact that she is so obviously a good hunter and so enjoys it will probably bring in a lot of blue dog dems from the west who are tired of the “animals are people too” crowd.

How can I find out what GOV PALIN has done in the way of Executive Decisions since she's been governor? I'm specifically looking to see if she has ever ordered any deployments of the Alaskan National Guard (demonstrating Commander in Chief duties) and if she has signed any DEATH WARRANTS as Governor (demonstrating a willingness to make life and death decisions soundly)???

Did you ever see "Major League"? Remember the scene where Serrano, the big Cuban baseball player, was frustrated because his pagan idol continued to fail him when he wanted to hit curve balls?

He finally said, "Jobu -- I stick up for you, I good to you.... You no help me now -- I say, F**k you, Jobu -- I do it myself."

That's how I feel about the country club Republicans.

Palin, AK National Guard

Saw a thread earlier today where she has actually ordered F-22s and F-15s up to challange Russian aircraft (searched but couldn't find it).

AK doesn't have the death penalty, but I remember a thread where she said if the legislature passed it she'd sign it.

I just donated $100 on JohnMcCain.com. The last question on the page was whether I was referred there, and by whom.

Answer: Sarah Palin!

To answer some of your questions, she recently had to send an F22 after a bear bomber and escort it out of American airspace, the first in many years to over fly Alaska(Probably didn't order it directly but she sure as heck knew it was in the air). She has visited Kuwait where units of her Alaskan national guard are deployed and visited the hospital in Germany, you know the one Obama wouldn't visit without a photo op team present.

She has on going negotiations with Putin on fishing rights, has negotiated, and won, with oil companies for royalties to be paid to Alaska for Natural gas drilled in Alaskan lands. She has negotiated with Canada for a pipe line deal(for piping the gas being drilled for)that other governors could never quite seem to pull off.

This gives her foreign policy experience that Biden and Obama can't quite match.

Alaska had a surplus of tax Revenue last year so she ordered 1200 bucks per tax payer be returned. Dems have tried to equate this to the economic stimulus package the feds handed out this year, but it isn't flying.

I do not know about signing death warrents, but you might be able to google that information.

Although all of this stuff is readily available to anyone who wants to look, the MSM somehow overlooks most of it.

Yes, BUT.... Biden has been going on Sunday morning talk shows for 30 years, and Obama organized a community! How can you even compare Gov. Palin to THAT kind of experience?!? /sarcasm
