Conservatives Refusing to Support McCain: Here´s What You´ll Get
The American Chronicle ^ | August 26, 2008 | Nathaniel Shockey

Posted on 08/26/2008 7:29:23 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

There has been plenty of whining from conservatives concerning whether John McCain would select a pro-choice vice president. I just hope whining is all it is. As my colleague Dan Calabrese pointed out on August 21, the political leanings of the VP concerning abortion are largely irrelevant. The only way to meaningfully decrease the number of abortions is to convince people that abortion is a bad idea, not to legislate.

But this conservative whining must be starting to concern McCain and his political strategists at least a little. Maybe these people who keep complaining that McCain isn´t conservative enough are actually considering the possibility of not voting.

On one hand, Barack Obama simply isn´t popular enough to be truly threatening. He´s inexperienced, doesn´t understand the issues very well, doesn´t exude patriotism and has some horrendous relationship baggage. When you tally it up, it amounts to a major risk. And as past elections have shown, it´s been risks like these that have ultimately pushed people past the summer excitement and back into the autumn safety of conservative candidates who, if nothing else, seem more or less transparent.

But on the other hand, the support of the conservative base is an important element of this seasonal routine. So even if the swing voters play their role perfectly, as I suspect they will, it probably won´t be enough if a significant portion of the conservative base doesn´t vote.

So I must pose a question to the whining conservatives who are threatening to stay home on November 4, sitting in their La-Z-Boys with arms crossed, puffed up blood-tinted cheeks, and brows furrowed like a toddler who doesn´t want to take a nap. Are you prepared to deal with the consequences of an Obama presidency?

Realize that the average age on the U.S. Supreme Court is currently 68. John Paul Stevens is 88 and Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 75. Obama would select at least one, probably two new justices.

Bills that put crushing new requirements and taxes on businesses would almost certainly pass a Democratic Congress, and be signed by a president who has never run a lemonade stand in his life, much less a business. Don´t expect him to start vetoing bills just because they would drive our country´s deficit beyond anything prior.

Realize that Obama would not be aggressive on terrorism, that Islamofascists are probably licking their lips at the prospect of a passive American president who would be content to play defense, and would even take seriously the lip-service of radicals like the Iranian president. With an appeaser as our commander in chief, terrorist networks would inevitably regain strength, and more innocent people will die. Call it a scare tactic or anything you like. It´s completely logical.

Realize that 3 percent of Americans pay about half of America´s taxes. If we elect Obama, those numbers will be even more lopsided. Obama has pledged to increase taxes on the wealthy, who would, in turn, hide their money. That´s a brilliant plan if your goal is to completely stifle an economy.

Realize that Obama probably won´t allow America to drill for its own oil. Have you enjoyed watching our Congress take a vacation when we need them the most? With Obama at the helm, there will be even less pressure on them to do their jobs and get Americans the oil they desperately need. Expect more of the same naïve lip service that describes local oil-drilling as the problem, and not as the obvious solution it is.

Realize that when Obama talks about creating jobs, he means he will be building even more government agencies. He is not talking about letting the economy naturally flourish and creating jobs by getting the government out of the way. If you are ready for an even bigger government than our current one, Obama is your man.

Of course, Obama would not be without an upside. The evening news would be much more upbeat when the media´s biggest crush becomes the most powerful man in the world for four years. There would be no more of the incessantly grim ramblings to which we´ve become so accustomed.

Finally, realize that Obama has good intentions. I respect that he is an idealist, even if I disagree with his ideals. And if we do elect him, I don´t think America will crumble. I just think he would leave it in even worse condition than the one in which he found it.

So to conservative boneheads out there, standing in the corner, pouting because your first choice isn´t the Republican nominee, it´s time you got over it.

Anyone who believes that a vote for anyone but McCain is not a vote for Obama is just deluded.

This is the only sentiment I see posted on FR as a reason to vote for McCain. It's a pretty weak argument.

And an illogical one. It assumes that my vote can be taken for granted by the RNC and that I want McAmnesty in office, tainting the word 'conservative' with all his liberal agendas. If the assumption was the I had to vote for Obama and wanted him in office, then my not voting for president would be seen as voting for Obama. Both are illogical and are based on the bias of the assumer.

I would invite my Conservative FRiends to join us in the voting booths in November- No one should stay home. Those of you who are guided by your principles are needed now as much as ever.

I ask you to join me and others in open rebellion against this Republican Party, and their scurrilous bastard of a candidate.

Vote for the only true Reagan Conservative on your ballot, Alan Keyes.

As others are so fond of saying, your write in vote does not count- Whereas a vote for Keyes is certainly a vote for, and an endorsement of, the Conservative cause.

the lesser of 2 evils is necessary.

Only if your goal is more evil withe each passing election.

At least with McCain we are getting a soldier, and a true American, and we know he won’t allow partial birth abortion.

You're also getting the following socialist baggage with McCain as shown by the timepline provided by Doughtyone:

John McCain's Whimsical World of Conservatism
Food for thought for the Hillary Clinton Wing of the GOP

Video1 Video2 ( I do not endorse all of the information presented in video1 here. The video does touch on a number of topics, and I think most are germane ) If I could have found video that contained most of this information without touching on McCain's POW experience I would have posted it instead. Still, there are parts of McCain's POW experience that are troubling. I'd just rather not go there. Video2 shows how one MIA family rep is treated, confirming some of the reports in Video1.
1994/07/24 McCain joins with the Democrats to confirm nominee Stephen Breyer to be an Associate Justice on the SCOTUS. Nine Senators voted Nay...

“There has been plenty of whining from conservatives. . .”

This kind of attitude is the kind of nonsense that will sink McCain and his crew. I’ve been a registered Republican for years, but no longer. I’m an independent just the kind of person McCain says is so important to the Republican party. One caveat: I’m a conservative independent. I’m listening to John and his associates and the previous quote doesn’t make me happy.

It’s very simple. Everyone knows that the VP choice will indicate the future trajectory of the Republican party. This will tell me much about my support for McCain and the Republicans.

Hope you enjoy the first ever America-hating, white-hating, radical marxist muslim President of the United States, because that’s exactly what you are advocating.

Perhaps you can point out where exactly I am openly supporting an Obama win.

Oh wait, you can't...because I have never done such a thing.

Unfortunately, drinking McCain's special recipe for RINO Kool-Aid (spiked with extra hemlock for this election cycle) has a rather nasty side effect: it causes delusions such as the one reflected in your aforementioned and libelous comment about me.

If he becomes President he will be facing socialist Democrat majority Congress, many of which he has sided on several issues in the past. You're kidding yourself if you think he will nominate Conservative judges given those facts.

That's a good point. Plus he's already flat out stated that he would not appoint a conservative like Alito. How many facts do people need to face reality? I see that it is great to have a candidate to support, especially against the likes of Obama. But supporting McCain involves ignoring just about everything he's done in the last decade.

I’m a crazy aunt conservative;
The kind of right wing religious nutjob that the Republican party pretends doesn’t exist. At least until they need us, when they drag us out and beat us into accepting whatever half-baked pseudo-conservative they’re backing. They tell us it’s for our own good.
Then, when the crisis is over, they ignore our views and do whatever the hell they please.

Sorry, I’m not going for it. If Obama wins, maybe they can muster up a decent candidate in 2012.

Nathaniel Shockey points out that if conservatives don't fall on their swords for the "good of the nation" then everybody will get screwed except for politicians and government employees.

He calls the conservatives infantile for considering such an action.

What he doesn't say, and he knows it very well, is that if the conservatives do throw in with the elite Rockefeller country club Republicans, ONLY the conservatives get screwed.

McCain will do no better than Obama, and sacrifice conservatives to keep Rockefeller Republican perks.

If McCain loses, Republicans are finished, and they will see the DemoRat wrath with no one to protect them. Conservatives already have no one to protect them, and that won't change with McCain win or lose.

Also the author’s premise is wrong, you can’t convince people that abortion is wrong as long as it is legal. Legislation IS the answer, and the ONLY answer.

There lies the rub...NO abortion legislation; local state or federal; in light of Roe v Wade will be upheld in court as long as the SCOTUS is in the hands of mushy justices as it is now. Unless there is a Constitutional amendment or unless the courts come to their senses (fat chance of that) abortion rights will remain the law of the land. I agree with your sentiment but the author has a point that 2 seats on the SCOTUS are key and the last time I looked the VP has no say in that choice.

To me the choice of a pro life candidate speaks to the heart of conservatism. I spit of the legalities, th issue speaks to our very cores views of basic decency. We value life and the right to life. And we abhor those who would tread on such rights for the sake of expediency. We would like if McCain would be true to our value and to his by picking a VP who values life as much as his mother did.

No. Nor am I looking forward to the consequences of a McCain presidency.

The author should look at each point he makes and insert McCain's policies. His Cap-and-Trade scheme will destroy the economy. His Amnesty policy will do the same. His call for creating "green jobs" is a liberal dream come true. Etc, etc, etc.

Instead of these pseudo-journalists threatening conservatives and whining about people who will vote their conscience, perhaps they should focus their time on encouraging John McCain to quit acting like a Democrat so voters actually want to vote for the man.

I have paid attention. With a couple more conservative judges on SCOTUS, eventually that law will be struck down.

As it should. It violates the 1st amendment and has also proven to be unenforceable.

But the boogey man, as you call it, is not just that. And we will wake up to it sooner or later as a nation. The sooner we do, the less shooting there will have to be done. History shows us this. Especially throughout Europe.Spain did not cast off the last visage of Fascism until the mid 1970s with the death of Franco. Its here and its here now. I would much rather use the vote than the gun. Of course the Germans, Italians and the Spanish had the same opportunity as we now have, and did not take it either.

Many of them thought and spoke about the issue much as you do now.

Same here. It would indicate his mindset - whether it's another 'screw you' to conservatives or the realization that he needs to pay attention to us. However, I fear a true conservative VP wouldn't want to be associated with a McCain presidency.

He hasn’t announced his choice yet, and if he chooses a pro-life veep, than all this worry is for nothing.

I think that some of the pro-abort names who have been paraded have been a ruse to play the press, not serious possibilities.

Us Freadheads, Romneyites, Giulianianians, Hunters, Tancredoans, and all the rest, wish it was are guy being nominated, but its not. We all feel our candidate is more conservative, better looking, a better speaker, or just younger than McCain, but he’s there and our guy isn’t.

I have many policy differences with George Bush, but I strongly feel God could give us no better man to lead us out of 9/11.

Who would of thought that the country could bounce back so fast after that devastating day. And then not be hit again because Bush sent a clear message to terrorist listed on the Worlds Terrorist Scorecard, that if their name is not yet scratched off as being captured or killed, they soon will be. Under Bush many many names on the Worlds Terrorist Scorecard, and all but about 8 names on the 55 most wanted Iraqi fugitive playing deck have been scratched off. Captured or in Hell.

Even with these successes, this Russian invasion of Georgia shows you how quickly even small skirmishes can turn into what we have all feared since the Cold War. Out of all the names of the original Republicans running for President, like him or not, McCain may be best suited to handle the situation with this more aggressive Russia. Our action or inaction could dictate Russia’s next move, in what appears to be a re-expansion of parts of its former Soviet borders.

McCain’s 22 years in the Navy and 26 years in the Senate is vastly more important than Obama’s 160 days in the Senate and 0 time in the military.

For this very same reason, providence may have given us McCain. NOT THE BEST MAN, BUT THE RIGHT MAN.

He should continue to take a dump on conservative heads throughout the general election. When you get to the big dance you have to dance with the one who brought you.

He won’t get my money or support. Good luck with the wishy washy masses.
