Conservatives Refusing to Support McCain: Here´s What You´ll Get
The American Chronicle ^ | August 26, 2008 | Nathaniel Shockey

Posted on 08/26/2008 7:29:23 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

There has been plenty of whining from conservatives concerning whether John McCain would select a pro-choice vice president. I just hope whining is all it is. As my colleague Dan Calabrese pointed out on August 21, the political leanings of the VP concerning abortion are largely irrelevant. The only way to meaningfully decrease the number of abortions is to convince people that abortion is a bad idea, not to legislate.

But this conservative whining must be starting to concern McCain and his political strategists at least a little. Maybe these people who keep complaining that McCain isn´t conservative enough are actually considering the possibility of not voting.

On one hand, Barack Obama simply isn´t popular enough to be truly threatening. He´s inexperienced, doesn´t understand the issues very well, doesn´t exude patriotism and has some horrendous relationship baggage. When you tally it up, it amounts to a major risk. And as past elections have shown, it´s been risks like these that have ultimately pushed people past the summer excitement and back into the autumn safety of conservative candidates who, if nothing else, seem more or less transparent.

But on the other hand, the support of the conservative base is an important element of this seasonal routine. So even if the swing voters play their role perfectly, as I suspect they will, it probably won´t be enough if a significant portion of the conservative base doesn´t vote.

So I must pose a question to the whining conservatives who are threatening to stay home on November 4, sitting in their La-Z-Boys with arms crossed, puffed up blood-tinted cheeks, and brows furrowed like a toddler who doesn´t want to take a nap. Are you prepared to deal with the consequences of an Obama presidency?

Realize that the average age on the U.S. Supreme Court is currently 68. John Paul Stevens is 88 and Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 75. Obama would select at least one, probably two new justices.

Bills that put crushing new requirements and taxes on businesses would almost certainly pass a Democratic Congress, and be signed by a president who has never run a lemonade stand in his life, much less a business. Don´t expect him to start vetoing bills just because they would drive our country´s deficit beyond anything prior.

Realize that Obama would not be aggressive on terrorism, that Islamofascists are probably licking their lips at the prospect of a passive American president who would be content to play defense, and would even take seriously the lip-service of radicals like the Iranian president. With an appeaser as our commander in chief, terrorist networks would inevitably regain strength, and more innocent people will die. Call it a scare tactic or anything you like. It´s completely logical.

Realize that 3 percent of Americans pay about half of America´s taxes. If we elect Obama, those numbers will be even more lopsided. Obama has pledged to increase taxes on the wealthy, who would, in turn, hide their money. That´s a brilliant plan if your goal is to completely stifle an economy.

Realize that Obama probably won´t allow America to drill for its own oil. Have you enjoyed watching our Congress take a vacation when we need them the most? With Obama at the helm, there will be even less pressure on them to do their jobs and get Americans the oil they desperately need. Expect more of the same naïve lip service that describes local oil-drilling as the problem, and not as the obvious solution it is.

Realize that when Obama talks about creating jobs, he means he will be building even more government agencies. He is not talking about letting the economy naturally flourish and creating jobs by getting the government out of the way. If you are ready for an even bigger government than our current one, Obama is your man.

Of course, Obama would not be without an upside. The evening news would be much more upbeat when the media´s biggest crush becomes the most powerful man in the world for four years. There would be no more of the incessantly grim ramblings to which we´ve become so accustomed.

Finally, realize that Obama has good intentions. I respect that he is an idealist, even if I disagree with his ideals. And if we do elect him, I don´t think America will crumble. I just think he would leave it in even worse condition than the one in which he found it.

So to conservative boneheads out there, standing in the corner, pouting because your first choice isn´t the Republican nominee, it´s time you got over it.

Sorry, but killing babies by the million is not a peripheral issue for many of us.

McCain claims to be pro-life, and for the most part his record confirms it—with the exception of his dumb support of public funding for fetal stem cell research, when adult stem cell research has proven to be so much better.

But what do we make of a man who is pro-life on principle, yet is willing to take on an abortion lover as his VP, and possibly to groom him to be the next president?

Sorry, that says to me that McCain really doesn’t take this issue very seriously. He doesn’t mind killing babies if it’s politically convenient.

The situation is much like the 2006 election. Whom do you blame, the voters who stayed home, or the Republicans who kicked them in the teeth until they stayed home? It’s kind of a silly question. Don’t kick your base in the teeth, it’s not smart politics.

Frankly, McCain is a pretty marginal candidate as it is, what with McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, the Gang of 14, and so on, and many people will only vote for him because Obama is so much worse. But if it’s a choice between two pro-abortion candidates, and if a vote for McCain means there will no longer be a pro-life party to vote for in the future, then—sorry—a lot of people will stay home.

And that will be no one’s fault but McCain and his stupid advisers, who decided to kick the base in the teeth one more time.

Just don’t do it. It’s that simple.

McCain’s mother pointed out (laughing about it) that conservatives have no choice but to hold their noses and vote for her son.

That was Bush 41's reelection strategy as well.

Of course he lost what should have been an easy reelection.

Given judges’ traditional longevity on the Court, it’s important to understand that Obama’s presidency could affect every aspect of American life — criminal law, civil law, trade agreements, college admissions, abortions, managed care, anything you can think of — for a good thirty or forty years.

Get used to thinking it and blame the GOP leadership for making it so.

Oh great, the new GOP strategy: insult and belittle your constituents and then expect them to vote for you and give you money.

But hey, what else can we expect from the boneheaded idiots in the country club, Rockefeller wing of the GOP?

Screw the GOP. Let it die like the Whigs.

The issues surrounding this election are much lager than single moral issues, like abortion or stem cell research. The fact is tha America is being accosted by a leftist movement which is liberal socialist evolving towards fascism.

You may vote according to religious or moral values, but you may have missed the genuine issue of the devolution of our Republic into a fascist state. Then those of moral conscience will lose even the right to speak out about it. It will be outlawed as illegal hate speech. Its already happened in Canada.

Our nation will become balkanized into a mosaic of racial and ethnic provinces, administered by government morality police. English will no longer be the language of government. Our military will become so weak that we will no longer be a beacon of freedom and a sheild of protection in the world at large.

So for those who are that directly religious and moralistic, think about the sin of allowing the nation to become without the traditional freedoms which allow us all to worship as we please, and to continue to create a more perfect union of citizens. On balance for me , voting to prevent that is to prevent a greater sin of loss of the freedom tha God gave our nation so we might do good to each other and in the world. Without that freedom the issue of abortion will be irretrievably lost to the Godless.

So which will it be?

This is the context of the greater view, and I would urge all to consider it very carefully.

Therefore, neither one will be receiving our vote.

I'm with ya. Principles over party. I was taught that this is what this country was founded on. Principles. Let's get back to what made this country great.

McCain would appoint judges who are much more likely to protect (most of) the unborn

I wish I was as sure as you are. He voted for Gingsburg and already said he wouldn't appoint someone like Alito, who wore his conservatism on his sleeve. As if that's a bad thing.

Hope you enjoy the first ever America-hating, white-hating, radical marxist muslim President of the United States, because that’s exactly what you are advocating. Buy hey, at least you have your principles. I’m sure that will give you comfort while this nation is rendered unrecognizable by Obama and his extremist followers.

Your sons are a credit to who you are. You and your sons are the best of what America is. If your conscience tells you not to vote for McCain, I totally respect that. I struggle with the decision too. I have come to the conclusion that I can not let obama get his hands on this country no matter what.

Hey, that strategy worked so well in 2006 we got Pelosi as Speaker. It’s a one party cartel.

Well said, patriot08. Anyone who believes that a vote for anyone but McCain is not a vote for Obama is just deluded. An Obama presidency is simply unthinkable. I am hard pressed to imagine a Marine "sitting out" a firefight, or shooting at trees while enemy soldiers advance against his buddies. No way!

And as flawed as McCain is on many Conservative issues, his consistent stand against Abortion has been stellar. His only fault is a commonly-shared misunderstanding of the adult vs. embryonic stem cell debate -- but an honest pro-lifer should come around when he sees the light on that issue. As another poster pointed out, Perfect is the greatest enemy of Good.

McCain can still get my vote. If he doesn't pick a pro-abortion veep or pick the Huckster as veep, whom I blame for why we are stuck with McCain and not another conservative. The bad news is, if we don't win and have a strong Veep to run next time, the huckster will do it to us again.

Yep, threaten us into voting for the other candidate.

I’ll tell you what Senator McCain. Instead of giving us reasons to vote against the other Liberal candidate, give me a reason to vote for you. Select a Conservative VP.

Actually, barring an illness, your scenario is not likely. The oldest justices are the libs. Obama would just replace one with another. The youngest justices are the conservative ones - unless one gets ill, one will not be replaced for at least another decade or more.

Using the stats of when justices retire, the likelihood of even one getting appointed in the next 4 years is slim. However, the following 8 years will be the crucial ones if we want to replace the older libs with conservatives.

I fear a McCain presidency could doom conservatism by having his liberal agenda associated with it. And impacting the 2012 election in the same way. However, if Obama and the Dem Congress (likely) pull a Carter (even more likely), we just might get a real conservative in 2012. It's a weak hope, but it's all we got. McCain already said he would not appoint a conservative (like Alito, the 'sleeve' comment is pretty telling of his mindset).

I agree that McCain's position on embryonic stem cell research is inconsistent (to put it mildly), but McCain would appoint judges who are much more likely to protect (most of) the unborn than the judges Obama would appoint.

I suggest you think McCain's position on judges through more thoroughly. If he becomes President he will be facing socialist Democrat majority Congress, many of which he has sided on several issues in the past. You're kidding yourself if you think he will nominate Conservative judges given those facts.

To paraphrase Voltaire, the best is the enemy of the good.

To quote Ronald Reagan addressing CPAC in 1975:

“A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers.”

Now, you should know that there has never been a conservative that gave ground on their principles to reach a political compromise.

In fact, none of our founding fathers compromised on anything.
