AMERICANS are sharply divided by race ahead of the first presidential election in which a black candidate will represent a major party, a New York Times/CBS News poll showed today,

The poll found that blacks and whites hold vastly different views of Sen. Barack Obama, an Illinois Democrat who would be the first black president, and are also divided on the state of race relations in the US, the newspaper reported.

In the survey, 83 per cent of blacks had a favorable opinion of Mr Obama, compared with 31 per cent of white voters.

Mr Obama will face John McCain, a white Republican senator from Arizona, in the November 4 presidential election.

On the status of race relations, 59 per cent of black respondents they were generally bad, compared with 34 per cent of whites who thought the same way.

The nationwide telephone poll of 1796 adults showed that 39 per cent of blacks said there had been no real progress in recent years in getting rid of racial discrimination.

Only 17 per cent of whites said the same thing.

Twenty-seven percent of whites said too much had been made of problems facing black people, while half of blacks said not enough had been made of racial barriers faced by black people.

How is it even possible Obama could be ahead in ANY poll if those numbers are accurate?

I agree.

The racism in Obama's church, except for the color, was straight out of a 1930's Ku Klux Klan rally.

while half of blacks said not enough had been made of racial barriers faced by black people.

How would it be possible to make more of the barriers faced by black people?  White people are endlessly told that they are singularly responsible for any and all failures of blacks, and that modern whites are personally responsible for the slavery of  hundreds of years ago.  Decades of 'affirmative action' policies and programs have destroyed the careers and dreams of millions of  qualified white people while pushing unqualified blacks into positions in academia and everywhere else in the job markets that they never would have achieved on the basis of their own merits.  Schoolchildren are indoctrinated into a rigid pathology of white guilt beginning at Kindergarten, and uttering certain words can destroy your career and possibly cause you legal trouble if you're white, but are entirely acceptable to say if you are black.

How much further do white people need to bend over in an effort to accommodate and pay homage?  What more can possibly be done?

the Buried Lead for today? 17 per cent of black voters didn't have a favorable opinion of Obama, and 69 per cent of white voters also didn't have a favorable opinion of Obama.

Boy! Who could have guessed..

The vast majority of blacks will readily admit they'll vote for Obama because he's black! THAT is RACISM..

Many whites will refuse to vote for him, due to his lack of experience, undemonstrated competence, suspicions about his racist and terrorist mentors, friends and supporters.
That is NOT racism - that is rational thinking.

Who says that a candidate can't get votes despite being rated "unfavorable"??? And who said they are distributed along Electoral lines.

Sen. Obama has surged ahead of Sen. McCain in key states such as PA and OH...and who knows what his favorable ratings are...I know that Sen. McCain's are low, too.

What a mess...bad candidates.

How about this one: Let's see what percentage of Armenians (just for example) think that Armenian problems are getting enough of the world's attention. Then let's poll the rest of the world as to whether the problems of Armenians are getting enough attention. Without any insight into the problems of Armenians, what do think the results would be?

If you want to further divide this country along racial, social and economic lines,,,

an arrogant, condescending elitist like B. (whose middle name must never be spoken) Obama,

his racist ex-pastor, close friend, mentor and spiritual advisor Rev. Wright,

and his arrogant, elitist, cocky, anti-American wife,,,

ARE THE RIGHT PEOPLE AT THE RIGHT TIME!!!

As much as I dislike McCain

And the time to have found an alternative to McCain was in the primaries, not in the general.

"and his arrogant, elitist, cocky, anti-American wife,,,"

This is strictly anecdotal on the subject "female"...A picture appeared in a recent Detroit News of a line of people waiting to get tickets for a Michelle Osama event in Pontiac, Michigan. There were approximately 20 people in the picture, not one of them was not africanhyphenamerican.

I don’t know a single white democrat who is voting for Obama. They all say he is a Muslim.

They don’t include a link to the poll. I’m guessing that the poll actually had 4 or 5 responses: Favorable, slightly favorable, slightly unfavorable, unfavorable. Something like that. Rasmussen polls favorability in that manner...I’d have to go over there to see exactly how he does it, but that’s in the ballpark.

I agree, however, that blacks in this country are not treated equally. I think we seriously injure any community by making government handouts available to those who have the capacity to work for their own living and establish their own independence.

The very best thing that could be done for the any race in America is to establish strict workfare for the unemployed and even for most of the disabled. We can complain about old programs like the CCC, but they did a lot of infra-structure work on smaller roads and bridges that was going undone.
