Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB) is in the final stages of striking a production sharing agreement with the Jordanian government to explore oil from the country's vast oil shale, a senior official at the state-run Natural Resources Authority said Thursday.
"We are about to complete drafting a production sharing agreement with Shell and expected to sign the agreement initially in September this year," NRA's assistant director-general for mining and petroleum, Hisham al-Rabi, told Dow Jones Newswires.
The PSA needs the approval of the Jordanian government and parliament, he said. Shell is expected to invest more than $20 billion in the project over a period of 20 years. The project would cover an area of 22,000 square kilometers, al-Rabi said. The area that Shell would explore stretches from northern Jordan and west Safawi to Azraq in the middle and Sirhan and al-Jafer in the south.
The project could produce thousands of barrels of oil from oil shale, and the kingdom holds some 40 billion metric tons of proven oil shale reserves, a figure which could be doubled, he said. Under Jordanian production sharing terms, the contractor receives 60% of oil production or gas equivalent up to 10,000 barrels a day, with a sliding scale to a 35% share of production over 100,000 barrels a day oil equivalent.
Oil shale refers to sedimentary rocks, mostly carbonates to chalk marl which when heated to above 500 degrees Celsius produces oil and gas. Oil produced from oil shale is mainly used for generating electricity.
Al-Rabi said the Jordanian Natural Resources Authority is also holding talks with an Estonian firm called EESTI Energy, specialized in oil shale, to finalize a production sharing agreement to explore oil shale at Attarat Um El-Ghurdan in southern Jordan. He gave no figure on the cost...

This is good news!!! The more experience that Shell gets with shale oil, the quicker it will be able to bring Rocky Mountain shale oil online after Congress approves of it.
That's true and people need to know that Democrats banned oil companies like Shell from getting the 1 trillion barrels of oil form oil shale pin the U.S.. which is why Shell has to go to Jordan to get a much smaller amount of oil shale when we have all the oil we need in our own backyard in the form of oil shale.
With oil prices at an all-time high, Americans are facing escalating gas, diesel, and aircraft fuel increases. Oil prices are projected to increase further. Congress, however, has made it illegal to develop vast domestic oil resources in large parts of the United States. The most startling Congressional prohibition on domestic oil production concerns the recently enacted ban on the development of oil shale resources in parts of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming in the Green River Formation. According to a Rand Study estimate, this reserve contains over one trillion barrels of oil, with 800 billion barrels fully recoverable, or three times the current oil reserves as Saudi Arabia:
"Yet, buried in a Department of Interior appropriations bill passed in December 2007 was an amendment that prevented establishing regulations for leasing land to drill for oil shale. The House passed that amendment, proposed by Rep. Mark Udall of Colorado, on June 27, 2007, by a vote of 219-215. "
It was an amendment to a large bill, buried in some kind of huge horrible energy bill that put all kinds global warming regulations on us ,including higher mileage for cars etc. Of course most Democrats voted for this amendment and the bill too. Here is the roll call vote:

The only thing that would increase oil supply significantly is if Congress would repeal the ban that Democrats put on developing shale oil in Colorado.Congress and Democrats must allow oil companies to get the trillion barrels of oil in oil shale in the western United States. But we know Democrats/Communists will not allow this. The only way is for the public to find out about this and make them do it.
This amount of oil would power every car and completely power the U.S. for hundreds of years or at least a hundred years.
I am going to email this to all the radio talk show hosts and everyone I know. If you value your way of life maybe you can also spend some minutes emailing. This Democrat Udall who introduced this ban on shale oil and the Democrats in Congress want to kill us. This Democrat Udall is a traitor.
What further proof do people need to see that government is the enemy of the people? Democrats and McCain want to bring in hundreds of millions, hordes of 3rd world foreign people and not allow us Americans to get a trillion barrels of oil in our own back yard. And we have everywhere even on this site people calling for government to further regulate the speculators and our economy .How will these evil villains in government "save" us from that which has created our great civilization , capitalism. Government surely hasn't created this civilization and surely not the government educated public which are dumb enough to trust government. When will people get it that government is the enemy that government is the problem not the solution to any problem?

Worth repeating.
A year or so ago, I read where some company had a test plant in Colorado where they insert long heated tubes in the ground a certain distance apart. Up from the ground comes a bubblin’ crude. Oil that is, Black gold, Texas Tea.
After the initial oil is released from the rock, they inject steam to get the rest out.
Welcome to the Mahogany Research Project
Our quarter of a century investment researching Shells patented In situ Conversion Process has yielded exciting results.
By the time that happens there will be no American oil companies. We'll have to contract foreign oil companies to do it for us. We won't have the technology. (a bit of hyperbole, but US oil companies are moving major business operations out of the USA and to Dubai.)
This from the website - we can't wait 7 years.
They got 1,700 barrels out of a 60' X 30'test area. What are they waiting for? Other than Shell is a Dutch company.
Course now the green weanies are keeping all that natural resource at bay.
There is only one Country in the world that doesn’t maximize its energy production. This is the ONLY issue this year.
If you like $5/gal, Thank Congress.
Pray for W and Our Troops
If it were me, I’d have to strongly consider moving shop to someplace like Dubai as well. Go where you’re wanted. Don’t go where you’re not wanted.
If the people who don’t want you, suddenly realize they need you after all, fine, but the price just went up.
So, again, why do we have a moratorium on oil shale development in the US?
Because Democrats in Congress banned oil companies like Shell from getting the 1 trillion barrels of oil from oil shale in the U.S., which is why Shell has to go to Jordan to get a much smaller amount of oil shale when we have all the oil we need in our own backyard in the form of oil shale in the western United States.

The liberal media won't report this. So it's up to us to spread it around the internet.
To go along with this too many people who live in the United States will be happy to give the politicans contro; of their lives. Self reliant individuals are a minority in the United States.
Good post - I’ll pass it on! ;-)
The government to release more land for oil shale production. To date, they have only allowed small pilot plants. The EIS has been repeated delayed for more review.
Not true. It has been done in other part of the world for decades. Look to Brazil and Estonia for long term projects.
It sounds like they’re going to build a power plant to produce enough electricity to heat oil shale to 500 degrees so they can generate more electricity and have some gas and oil left over to export.
Is this good business?
Where did you read they would use electricity to heat the oil shale?
