Five-point energy proposal may lower gas prices in near future
5-point plan aims to help rid nation of 'oil addiction'
By Kevin Clark | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
10:07 PM EDT, July 3, 2008

DEERFIELD BEACH - U.S. Rep. Ron Klein announced a "Declaration of Energy Independence" Thursday, a plan he hopes to push through Congress that he says will help the country with what he calls an "addiction to oil."

Klein, D- Boca Raton, thinks the plan, unveiled at a news conference, , could work to lower gas prices in the near future.

The five-point plan consists of:

• Imposing criminal penalties for gas price gougers;

• Stopping speculation that drives up oil prices;

• Demanding oil companies drill all the land they control but are not drilling before leasing new federal land;

• Expanding clean energy tax;

• Investing in research for affordable energy.

"Let's use American innovation and a sort-of Manhattan Project thinking," Klein said, referring to the 1940s effort that developed the atomic bomb. "Let's find the answers to these problems, and there's a science-based solution to them."

Klein particularly attacked a proposal for oil drilling off the Florida coast, saying the benefits wouldn't be realized for five to 10 years.

The Hill newspaper in Washington reported Wednesday that Klein owned between $1,000 and $15,000 in stock in Hornbeck Offshore Services, which doesn't drill but provides equipment such as tugboats to the drillers.

Klein also called for taking away subsidies from oil companies and possibly putting them toward challenge grants for scientists for alternative energy.

If the republicans were smart, they would introduce legislation to remove ALL restrictions on the existing federally leased land, so the oil companies could “drill all the leases they haven’t drilled”, and thus give us the 4.6 million barrels of oil the Democrats say they want the oil companies to drill.

If Clinton had not vetoed the budget bill Republicans sent him in 95 that allowed for drilling in ANWR, we’d be using ANWR oil right now. Thanks, Bill Clinton. We can’t let him get by with this.

"This talk of an energy “Manhattan Project” is absurd. There was well-understood and -developed science behind the Manhattan project. There’s nothing of the sort waiting in the wings to replace existing energy systems."

We have a ready alternate, partly or wholly as a result of the first Manhattan project - nuclear. This isn't directly applicable as a replacement for all the uses of oil, but it is a great start, along with drilling lots of holes.

The anti-Bush, anti-Republican Party, anti-conservatism, and dumbed down sheeple populations are very large throughout the U.S., and, unfortunately, many of these same groups of people do vote on election day. They all see Obama as a savior with all of the solutions to all of the issues, and nothing anyone does will truly change their views of Obama no matter how much Obama may screw up prior to November 4.

RATS have decided to slow-bleed the country's economy. They'll pay for it - at the ballot box.

I have every confidence the pubs will snatch defeat from the hands of victory.
They just don't know how to fight and refuse to learn.

The President could and should be banging the dims over this oil 'crisis'. But he won't and we will take the blame.

These people are even stupider than I thought. Can they define "gouging"? Is there a certain profit margin that's permissable? Does it apply to all products of just oil?

I think we already know the answers to those questions.

Fencepost, you've won your intelligence contest!

anti-Bush, anti-Republican Party

What's Bush done to expand oil production in the USA....what has any republican done to expand oil production in the USA? What has Bush or the republicans done to expand nuclear energy in the USA? Other than throwing $$$ to ADM they haven't done a damn thing.

When it comes to energy production for the USA both Bush and the republican elected Congress have been as worthless as tits on a boar.

This “invest in renewable energy” is ridiculous.
Solar power projects on federal lands are on hold because environmentalists sued for more impact studies.
Wind power off the Massachusetts cape is on hold because Kennedy needs a pristine beach view.
Hydroelectric projects are threatened to save non-threatened fish or so Native Americans can have a couple more fishing jobs.
Geothermal is illegal in the places it would work best (Yellowstone national park).
Liberals are hobbling the renewable energy projects we have. Why more research? So they have something else to oppose?

Can they define "gouging"?

Yes. One station charges $4.01 and another station, 100 yards away, is charging $4.05. THAT'S gouging.

The fault truly remains with ALL of Congress from BOTH major political parties, and their fault on this issue goes back to the ‘70’s when the last oil refinery was built in 1976 and while environmentalists were given too much political clout on this issue from then on!

Thank you. It needed to be said again.

“This jackass’s first four points will just ensure greater employment for government lawyers. The fifth one was tried by Jimmie Carter back in 1979 or 1980 and it was a failure. The only plan that will work is (1) “Drill Here, Drill Now” and (2) “Build More Refineries Now.””

You forgot to add (3) “Build nuclear power plants”

I very much concur. But almost no one on the Left that is talking “Manhattan Project”, implies nuclear when they’re doing so. They’re talking Faerie Dust Energy - Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Tides, etc. None of these so-called environmentally friendly sources is going to power our society, or even a significant fraction of it, any time soon.

And the Greens and the Left have gotten us so hamstrung with environmental regulation that even these sources aren’t considered environmentally acceptable. Windmills kill too many birds and the NIMBYs can’t even see them on the horizon (re: the Cape Cod windmill farm that was stopped). Even new solar installations have been stopped for a time for environmental reasons:

U.S. temporarily halts new solar projects

The Greens and the Left (among whom I include some portion of the Rs) are going to stop rational resource development until there is serious pain felt and people start to wake up and apply political pressure. This would all be a lot easier if we could get started now.

This is all pure rat droppings.

The five-point plan consists of:

• Imposing criminal penalties for gas price gougers; Every time the rats have investigated “gas gouging” they have only succeeded in showing the world how little they understand about the free market system.

• Stopping speculation that drives up oil prices;
We don’t do things like this in America comrade. We couldn’t anyway. The world trades in oil futures jackass, not Wall Street alone.

• Demanding oil companies drill all the land they control but are not drilling before leasing new federal land;
This is a new and creative rat lie to keep us tied up and on our way to destruction. The price of oil is now so high that any company that had oil and could drill free of government interference would be doing so. Also a sign of the foolish rat lack of understanding of how the real non socialist world works: Just have the lease doesn’t mean oil is under your ground.

• Expanding clean energy tax;
Taxing us! Now there’s a fresh rat idea if there ever was one!

• Investing in research for affordable energy.
All rat plans come with this on pre printed as the final point. It is designed to be the final chance to fool a dim wit reading or listening to this bull shiite. Notice the soft edged language. The rat always talks like this so he can constantly move the goal posts.

Alan West must be scoring points against this scumbag for him to respond with this gibberish.
