Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who previously said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, has announced his opposition to a California ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriages.
In a letter to Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club read Sunday at the group's annual Pride Breakfast in San Francisco, the Illinois senator said he supports extending "fully equal rights and benefits to same-sex couples under both state and federal law."
"And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states," Obama wrote.
Obama had previously said he personally opposes same-sex marriage, but each state should make its own decision.
A spokesman for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who last week endorsed Proposition 8 on the Nov. 4 California ballot, accused Obama of continuing a pattern of changing his position on issues.

I think Obama needs to campaign on his support for gay marriage. Unfortunately, if he did that I’m sure McStain would jump on board with his support too.
Apparently, the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, so long as each state is prepared to approve of the issue of gay marriage.
McPain came out (suprisingly) in favor of the CA constitutional amendment. Too bad he hasn’t discovered the conservative position on illegal aliens or global warming.
You noticed that too, huh? What a charlatan.
He stood strong and told her he disagreed with her on the issue.
Nobody knows about tomorrow (but I'm pretty sure we can guess reliably on this one).
No doubt that if the polls show most are in favor of the ban bambi will change his tune once again. He is a complete fraud.
He may be better than Obama in many, many, ways. I just don't trust him not to say anything to anyone, especially if it goes against Conservative principles.
Who knew there was a ‘Pride Breakfast?’
Will there also be breakfasts for Greed, Lust, Envy, Wrath, Sloth and Gluttony?

“Apparently, the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, so long as each state is prepared to approve of the issue of gay marriage.”
Unfortunately, when it is left up to the states and the people vote against same sex unions, as with Prop 22, the courts by fiat can overturn the will of the people of the state. I wonder if Obama supports judicial tyranny over the rights of the state’s voting majority?
No need to tell me about Mccain. I’m writing in Duncan Hunter in November.
Exactly right. Those who favor states rights on the marriage issue want to see same-sex marriage. They aren’t truly in favor of each state making a determination of whether they want homosexual marriage.
It’s good to see them be honest about their positions. Why doesn’t Obama just come out and say he favors homosexual marriage? He said he’s against it, but wants each state to decide, so he says. Yet he’s also in favor of repealing the federal marriage law. So on the one hand, he says let states decide (ya right) and on the other hand, he prefers there to be no law at the federal level defining marriage.
And with no law at the federal level, that leaves it wide open for future federal courts to say, well, there’s no law against same-sex marriage at the federal level, so just accept any definition of marriage from any state instead. That’s where this is headed.
[Who knew there was a Pride Breakfast?]
Hey, just let him eat his waffle. This is a distraction.
Yes Obama does favor judicial tyranny. Because he is against the move to override the Calif. court decision via constitutional amendment, he is against any moves to overturn the court order.
And he obviously loves judicial activism, because he applauded the CA court’s usurpation of power that stripped away the will of the people.
I oppose Obama running for president!
