California State Sen. Tim McClintock thinks Sen. John McCain should choose his former primary opponent, Fred Thompson for his running mate. McClintock made that statement at the Newsmaker Conference on May 24, hosted by The American Spectator and Americans for Tax Reform.
As a self-proclaiming, “real” conservative Republican, Sen. McClintock wishes for a return to Reagan conservatism in Congress and in the Oval Office. McClintock also expressed tepid enthusiasm for the GOP’s presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain.
“I was Fred Thompson’s state-wide chairman,” said McClintock. “McCain was not my first choice. He was not my second. He was not my third, fourth or fifth choice either. We can see the difference between a ‘fire’ and a ‘fireman’ and I think you are going to see that reality take hold in coming days among conservatives in California.”
McClintock insists his desire to return to traditional conservative principles is shared among his constituents. With strong convictions on issues including immigration, gay marriage, and the Iraq war, McClintock supports the “old school” values of the Reagan administration.

Sigh, I know. Palin, from all I’ve read, would be an outstanding choice.
I just...miss Fred. He was the only adult running.
One reason the primaries were such a totally uncoordinated mess of a free-for-all this year is, frankly, Dick Cheney. If Bush would have selected a younger, and more conservative Veep, that one man would have been a near cinch to take the mantle as the Republican candidate this year.
Assuming all the fates shine brightly, McCain is president for 8 years. Or maybe just 4, and politely declines to compete for a second term. At the end of either one or two terms, we need a stalwart conservative Veep, WHO IS ONLY ABOUT 48-55 YEARS OLD at that time, to be ready to become the next president.
And for all I like Fred, he's just not that guy. I cringe thinking of our combined ticket being a combined 150 years old, more or less...
Same here, Bud. In fact, I have said more than once that I will never vote for McCain. I am none too happy about having to reconsider that position as time goes on. By the time November gets here, I'll probably cast the vote...but I'm still not sure and my heart is not in it.
I have cut off all financial donations to the national party, and I will not give to the McCain campaign obviously. When they call, I always thank the person making the call for their work, but I am not shy about explaining why I am not giving.

He won’t do it, he already signed up with new representation to work in entertainment again.
I’d give it a 5% chance of happening, but he would have been the best Presidential candidate had he bothered to run at the appropriate time.
Fred Thompson would be a better choice for a cabinet position in a McCain administration. Either Mark Sanford, Mike Pence, or Sarah Palin would truly be better choices for VP, IMHO.
I guess its true - Reagan, 70 in 1981 - really couldn’t get elected in this day & age.
They’d have the Florida vote in the bag.

I would like to know where are all the GOP leaders with at least some military experience?
To the best of my knowledge none of the names thrown around, from John Thune to Mike Pence to Jindal to Portman and even Romney, Huckabee, Crist, Sanford....none with military experience at all? Granted I checked Wikipedia, so that is dicey I suppose. Please correct me.
We are in the post Vietnam era. Is it because there was a 15-20 year gap between Vietnam and Gulf War 1? Still you would think someone would emerge that went in the military at some point. Even someone who went in for the GI Bill to go to college etc.
Odd, unless I am missing something in the bios.
