American Airlines new bag policy discriminates against women, because most women will have to check their bag while men will not. As an example, here are the non-solid products my husband and I take when traveling:
My List: Shampoo, Cream Rinse, Body Wash, Body Lotion, Spray Perfume, Toothpaste, Mouthwash, Contact Lens Solution, Glasses Cleaner, Face Cleanser, Toner, Facial Night Cream, Moisturizer, Sunscreen, Vaseline Lip Therapy, Hand Cream, Mascara, Lipgloss
My Husbands List: Shampoo, Cream Rinse, Toothpaste, Mouthwash, Glasses Lens Cleaner
Since we are required to put our lotions in a quart bag if we want to carry them on board, it is clear that my husbands items will fit into a quart bag, while mine will not. Thus, I have to check the bag with my items, while he can carry his on. I will have to pay a $25.00 fee, while he will not. Cutting down the number of items I take is not an option because I have very dry skin and it is exacerbated by travel.
Most women use about 3 times as many products on a daily basis as men do. American Airlines policy is an example of discrimination against women who have no choice but to check their bags.
Your screen name not withstanding, I can’t help wondering if you actually know any women.
Just curious.. how so? Because I don’t think makeup matters? Or because I come off as such a jerk in the above post?
I think this was really a move by the Airline to put pressure on Baggage Handlers Union.
Exactly. Just talk your husband into using the same products as you do.
Also - I have purchased a travel set of small bottles and tubes and the equipment needed to transfer various lotions into them. If you are going somewhere that only requires a carry-on, the small amounts should be sufficient.
I find I can squeeze a whole lot of stuff into that one quart bag if necessary.
They should just let everyone who isn't going to get into the overhead bins off first, we would clear out of the plane in about 3 minutes or less, then the monkeys who didn't want to wait for baggage claim can make everyone else wait while they wrestle out their luggage.
Purchase the items after arriving at your destination.
If enough people refuse to fly AA based on these rules, they'll back off.
Those who dream up these pricing scheme are demented. People deeply resent having charges tacked on - it is like a violation of the bartering agreement, to their detriment.
I cannot fathom why supposedly successful, intelligent business people do not set the default price higher and then SUBTRACT the associated fees if certain services (i.e. checked baggage) are not requested. Is it simply because they want to have a lower ticket price show up at comparison ticket-shopping sites like Expedia and Travelocity (etc)? If so, the effect will only be transient - they will get one or two good quarters out of the policy before a semi-permanent black stain forms on their brand, with customers labeling them as cheap bastards with petty pricing schemes and “hidden fees”. Stupid stupid stupid.
I’ve been subsidizing females for years. They will never understand it that way though.
American Airlines would have been better off just charging more for their tickets. The American Airlines moron that thought this up should be fired. The only result is fewer passengers because they’ve angered the public. I don’t know where all the morons are coming from, but they’re in abundance these days especially in the service industry.
I’m a guy, and the list of “beauty products” I pack on a trip consists of 1) toothpaste, and 2) shaving gel. As far as shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, and soap are concerned, I use whatever the hotel provides. If I’m staying in a private home, I use whatever shampoo and soap is present in the shower.
I recommend not being so picky with respect to brands, and pack more lightly as a result. Really, it doesn’t make much difference.
Since there were a lot more openings on Sunday morning flights, I went to the airport expected to get a standby ticket per advertised policy. They still charged me $25 for the ticket change on a 40% capacity flight when I was giving up a ticket on a 98% capacity flight at about three times the fare. When I protested, the US Air agent told me that they really did not care about passenger traffic as they made more hauling freight. Maybe he just had an attitude, but if he was on the level, this could explain the reasoning behind the bag charges.
Any space savings I may have over the wife in the toiletries department are completely chewed up by extra pair of size 13 shoes that get stuffed in my bag.
If you really have a lot of stuff, (like me) you can go to Disney on the Autotrain. I can load my sportute full of bags, then load the whole vehicle on the train. Finally, I can bring all of my stuff. For people who don’t travel lite.
American doesn’t require you to take all that stuff on your flight; you choose to do that. There are plenty of reasons to dislike the policy, but crying “discrimination” when the same policy is applied to everyone equally is just indulging the same liberal silliness behind the current gay “marriage” push.
It's 25 dollars for the SECOND checked bag. The first bag will be 15 dollars for passengers ticketed on or after June 15th.
And isn't it the TSA that has established the carryon liquid allowance?
It discriminates against gun owners as well. Guns are required to be in checked baggage, so a fee on checked bags discourages citizens from taking there personal protective equipment with them.
What a self absorbed whiner. If it means that much to you mail it to your destination ahead of time. We are supposed to sacrifice our saftey so you can have moist skin?
