Reuters cameraman films his own death [video]

Reuters footage released on Wednesday shows the final moments of agency cameraman Fadel Shana as he films an IDF tank firing, moments before apparently being hit by the shell.

Subsequent footage shows the Reuters jeep on fire, and Shana's body lying next to it. Shana's jeep was marked "press" and witnesses said the cameraman was wearing an identifying flak jacket.

Reuters Editor-in-Chief David Schlesinger has called for an investigation of Wednesday's incident.

Thanks for that set of pictures. That camera does resemble a sighting device of a rocket launcher. Real DUH moment. Not smart to point that at a tank in a combat area.

Many modern weapons from sniper rifles to rocket launchers have optical sights.

You correctly point out that from the POV of a soldier, a lens pointing at you from a few hundred ways may be the immediate precursor to your death, via a sniper bullet or rocket.

A soldier has only a split second to react, in order to save his life.

If you embed with terrorists, and point a camera lens at soldiers from near them, you are going to get shot, period.

I saw only a small sign about 2x2 ft square that said TV in bold red against a white background and it looked like it was hastily placed on the hood. Also, I saw more than one “victim” at one part and none of them were wearing a flak jacket.

Something isn’t right there. How is it that there is that one “dead” guy in a perfectly clean white shirt with the one blood stain in what appears to be a posed position.

That just looks staged from every angle.

Was Al-Reuters embedded with the enemy?

Ambulances were used by terrorists to make escapes. Terrorists dressed like police and blew themselves up on buses.

Sometimes a wolf stalks in sheep’s clothing.

Perhaps if the media exposed the tactics of the terrorist movement and distanced themselves from the killers, they would not be caught in the crossfire or on the receiving end along with their buddies.

PBS aired a documentary about the “insurgency” including footage shot by reporters of the “insurgents” launching missiles at our side and randomly at cities.

Onlookers didn't pay much attention one way or the other to the military strikes the terrorists (who fly no flag) were launching.

But media talks about how wrong it is for us to launch return fire on “innocent civilians”. The civilians let the initial strikes happen. And didn't bother to leave the warzone. The enemy flies no flag in Iraq and technically are civilians. Who is an “innocent civilian” except the Iraqi citizens receiving those initial missile launches for supporting the new government?
