Obama, who has struggled to overcome Clinton's significant advantage among Latino voters in state after state, sought to one-up his rival for the Democratic presidential nod by joining the call for creating a national holiday to commemorate the father of the United Farm Workers.
"That's why I support the call to make Cesar Chavez's birthday a national holiday. It's time to recognize the contributions of this American icon to the ongoing efforts to perfect our union."
Eight states commemorate Chavez' birthday in some fashion. In California, all state offices are closed, but local government facilities and public schools are open.
The other states that officially honor Chavez are Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin.

Ceasar Chavez Day — the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard of in a very long time.
He’ll be calling for Hugo Chavez’s birthday to be a national holiday next.
After all, isn't that whose picture is displayed in his campaign offices?
Viva Los Kommunism!
Cesar Chavez’s birthday a national holiday? I must be dreaming. Somebody wake me.
I rarely LOL, but I did there!
Glad that I could be of service. :-)
attrack the hispanic voters?

Amazing!
There is no holiday for Washington, or Lincoln.
But we have one for Martin Luther King, and now one for Cesar Chavez.
Soon there willbe a holiday for some woman, Indian, Muslim, transgender - but not them white males.
And grapes are 4.99/lb! wtf
Or will we just have Aztlan Surrender Day instead?
Maybe an Ernesto Miranda (The Father of the Miranda warning) Day will be next.
Or, how about a Dred Scott day?
I saw a bit of Gore being interviewed (I think it was from "Sixty Minutes"). He commented that "60 is the new 59." What a sense of humor! He should have been a stand-up comedian.
The person who should be remembered on this date is Terri Schiavo--today is the anniversary of her death (state-sponsored murder).
Good Gravy! Is that why Austin recently renamed our 1st St. (literally our first street named way back in the early 1800s) Cesar Chavez St?
He was a unionist? Who knew!
thanks george76.

Maybe we should have a National DWI/Rape Day too?
All of the hospital will be closed, heck they are heading in that direction anyway.
Yer damn good at this!
;<)
Back in the early 70’s Ceasar Chavez came to speak at my high school. We had about 40% hispanics and when we entered the gym the teachers seperated us and made each race sit on opposite sides of the gym. Then Chavez got up and made a speech about how we should all boycot lettuce.
All I really remember is looking acrosss the gym at my hispanic friends and thinking, WTF?
I can see it now. If this guy is elected, no more Presidents day, no more Columbus day, no more Christmas.
