Michigan woman dies after being struck by ray

A 55-year-old Michigan woman was killed this morning in a freak accident just offshore of Marathon.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Bobby Dube said a Spotted Eagle Ray breached the water and struck the woman in the head.

"It knocked her unconscious and evidently she fell and struck something on the boat. Her mother, father and sister were onboard and performed CPR till they got back to the boat," Dube said. "By the time EMS arrived she was pronounced dead."

The Pigeon, Mich., native was aboard a 25-foot rental boat with her sister, mother and father, reportedly traveling at approximately 20 mph. Dube said the family intended to fish the reef line on the oceanside of Marathon.

* Dube said after the accident the family returned to the home they rent on 5th Avenue oceanside in Marathon. The ray landed onboard and laid dead on the deck of the boat following the accident.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office and FWC vehicles were on hand investigating the scene. Dube said the officers took statements from the woman's family.

Dube called the accident "an act of God," the likes of which he has never seen. He said the circumstances of the accident do not fall within guidelines to be classified a boating accident.

"We're just doing an accident report," he said.

Dube said officers on the scene estimated the animal to be between 80 and 100 pounds, with a 4-foot wingspan. He said no necropsy will be performed on the ray.

Sometimes animals like to remind humans they aren’t necessarily at the top of the ladder.

40 miles N. of Key West.
North end of the Seven Mile bridge.

I used to spot them from the bridges around Miami, often in pairs.

Oh, yeah, all of them do it. I would call it jumping rather than "breaching." Kind of like dolphins, and just as pretty. But I've never heard of one jumping into a boat like this.
