The NYT once ran a banner headline story “revealing” that George H Bush was a WW II war criminal because his diary entry seemed to say he strafed some Japanese troops in the Pacific. Enough said.

once again, the story is not the story, it's the media. the media is the story.
the media and its smoke and mirrors.
I never understood what Marshal McLuhan meant when he said "the media is the message." Now I think I might be getting it.

Yes, became a state in 1959. Obama was born in 1961.

McCain was born on August 29, 1936, at the Coco Solo Air Base in the then-American-controlled Panama Canal Zone[2] to Navy officer John S. "Jack" McCain, Jr. (19111981) and Roberta (Wright) McCain (b. 1912). His father and grandfather both eventually became United States Navy admirals,[3] and were the first father-son pair to both achieve four-star admiral rank.[4] His grandfather, Admiral John S. "Slew" McCain, Sr., was a pioneer of aircraft carrier strategy[5] who commanded all carrier forces in the Pacific Ocean theater of World War II, and led American forces into epic actions such as the Battle of Leyte Gulf, dying four days after the conclusion of that war.[4] His father was a submarine commander[4] decorated with both the Silver Star and Bronze Star.[5] McCain has Scots-Irish ancestry.[6]\\

I wish they would play this card. This again would show the democratic party trying to disenfranchised the military vote by saying the family members of service members are not eligible to run.

That's just the NY Times realizing that neither Obama nor Hillary will be able to beat McCain and that McCain needs to be taken out before the election.

I don’t think this has any legs. John McCain was born, to 2 “Natural-born” American parents, in a US base in the Panama Canal Zone, which was also controlled by the United States, his Father serving as a navy officer at the time. The whole point of the “Natural-born citizen” clause in article 2 was to prevent any possible subterfuge by foreigners. One can hardly make the case that McCain or his family deserve any skepticism in their loyalty to the US, John McCain especially.
Goldwater was born in the Arizona Territory, but no one made any serious qualms about his citizenship status when he ran in 1964. Only the the biggest liberal stickler would seriously contend that McCain is ineligible. Because it is such a complex topic ( what counts as american “soil,” unincorporated vs incorporated, etc) then we should err on the side of permission.

If the editors at the NYT could read, they would see he is eligible.I think you overlooking a big factor.
You are quoting that old document called the Constitution. You should know that it has been replaced by the Living Constitution. It is a similar document but has an implied provision that allows almost any judge anywhere and at any time to decide what it should mean. Since it is in the best interest of The People and The New York Times to have McCain be ineligible to run for the Presidency then the provision you quoted can clearly be interpreted to mean that he can't.
It's actually quite simple.
To: Kay Ludlow
OK, fine. We’ll give’m McCain ... in exchange for about seven million anchor babies. Deal?

My father was American; my mother Canadian when I was born in a military hospital in Newfoundland. I am an American citizen as much as any natural born citizen. Actually, could you not have chosen to be a Canadian citizen when you became an adult?
Did you not choose to become an American? Which then would make you more of an American then many people born here, since they had no choice.
PS: Congratulations on your choice.

Fine. Lets play along. Disqualify him and put Fred Thompson in his place. I like the way you think! I'm in!
To: Mean Maryjean
The NYT propaganda machine is trying to push what they think are conservative buttons. They think that they are driving conservatives away from McCain. Thus they accuse him of marital infidelity, something that no Dem would care about, but Republicans would. They accuse him of being a foreigner, something no Dem would care about, but Republicans would.
To: Kay Ludlow
I thought since he was born on a military base that this would not be a problem. The base is considered American soil.
