Senate Votes for Expansion of Spy Powers (68-29 vote)

After more than a year of wrangling, the Senate handed the White House a major victory on Tuesday by voting to broaden the government’s spy powers and to give legal protection to phone companies that cooperated in President Bush’s program of eavesdropping without warrants.

One by one, the Senate rejected amendments that would have imposed greater civil liberties checks on the government’s surveillance powers. Finally, the Senate voted 68 to 29 to approve legislation that the White House had been pushing for months. Mr. Bush hailed the vote and urged the House to move quickly in following the Senate’s lead.

Not surprising that Clinton and Obama abstained.

I don’t have to look to know that Sen. Dodd was among the 29. He was reading some comments into the record last night - and it was immediately apparent from the difficulty he had reading the prepared remarks that he had no understanding of the Internet or the concept of packet switching or really anything relevant to the idea of modern communications surveillance. What a fool. He was essentially arguing for the requirement that a warrant be requested each time a potentially dangerous communication was detected. By whihc time of course the communication would be complete. Thank God this $hit is on the record.

There is LESS than a year in President Bush’s reign. This is NO LONGER President Bush’s spy program.

If Obama and Mrs. Clinton are opposed to it and won’t use it, they should have voted NO. They support it and will use it far more than Bush will have a chance to.

“...voting to broaden the government’s spy powers and to give legal protection to phone companies...”

Good.

Just remember, Bush’s powers and expansion of office carries over to the Dems. Can you imagine Louie Freeh as head of Department of Motherland Security?

If anything they will probably feel more emboldened. Especially, if Hillbama gets in office and we abandon the Iraqis.

Don't see any Govt stomping on anyone right now. Where are all these Govt political prison and repressed dissidents you Libertines keep telling us are just around the corner because our bad old Govt is coming to "get us"?

You all have been screaming this same line since the drug war started. Yet 40 years later, still no dissidents being rounded up, no political prisons.

I keep hearing about how dastardly it is for the Govt to be listening in on Internet and phone communications between people in the USA and people over seas. People with connections to groups that have ties to those who murdered 3000 American civilians.

Funny how the same people in hysterics about this did not mind when they were monitoring "militas" and "right wing hate groups".

Ah but that right, it only dangerous to Libertines when the President is a Republican.
